Let’s talk about the Icon of the Seas. First, let me state the obvious—it’s huge. I’d compare it to the Grand Canyon in terms of scale. You hear that it’s big, everyone tells you it’s big, but until you actually see it for yourself, you don’t truly grasp just how massive it is. In fact, I’m pretty sure there were areas on the ship that I didn’t even get a chance to explore. Despite its size, though, it rarely felt crowded. The breakfast buffet could get a bit hectic, and events hosted in the Royal Promenade did bring large crowds together, but aside from that, it didn’t feel like there were 7,000+ guests onboard.

The Icon has just about everything a multigenerational family could want or need. There’s a water park, ice skating rink, rock climbing wall, kids’ and teens’ clubs, an arcade, ice cream parlors, the FlowRider, shows, a casino, comedy club, nightclub, live music—the list goes on, and I’m sure I’m forgetting a few things. Honestly, I’m not sure there’s another vacation option that offers all of this in one place.

The ship itself is stunning, and for the most part, the layout works. However, I did find it strange that you have to walk through the Playmakers sports bar to get to the ice skating theater. It’s not a huge inconvenience, but it felt a bit odd—especially when the bar was crowded during a football game. The elevators were surprisingly efficient, and I only remember waiting a long time once or twice. There are no midship elevators, only forward and aft ones. I think that’s because the center of the ship is open to make space for Central Park and Surfside, but it’s something to note.

Now, food is always a subjective topic. The food onboard was good, but nothing really “wowed” us. I would say the buffet was better than most cruise buffets. We enjoyed the wide range of complimentary dining options. The specialty restaurants, however, seemed overpriced, and we didn’t feel inclined to try them.

One slightly unpopular opinion I have is that we didn’t enjoy their production of The Wizard of Oz. I was really looking forward to it, but it turned out to be a bit dull. It followed the movie exactly and lacked originality. On the other hand, the ice skating show and the aqua show were fantastic! They would’ve been impressive even on land, but the fact that they pulled off all those stunts on a swaying ship made it even more impressive.

A common “complaint” I’ve heard, and one that I agree with, is that there aren’t many adults-only areas or quiet spots. I found it odd that children were allowed in the bars, and the nightclub didn’t turn into an 18+ venue until midnight. A small change like that could help Royal Caribbean appeal to a wider audience, in my opinion.

Would we cruise on Icon of the Seas again? If we had kids under the age of 17, it would be a definite yes. However, we’re at a point in our lives where we don’t need all the hustle, bustle, and bells and whistles. We’re content with good food, good music, and a few onboard offerings. Overall, I’d rate our experience a 7.5 to 8 out of 10. I’m glad we got to experience Royal’s mega-ship, but we’re definitely more into smaller ships.
