Clara Barton, The Angel of the Battlefield. Pictured is the Clara Barton monument at the north end of Antietam Battlefield. Barton was just a patent clerk in Washington, D.C. with no formal nursing training who took basic supplies to Antietam on September 17, 1862, arriving on the day of the battle. Behind the monument is the Joseph Poffenberger Farm which served as a "hospital" for the wounded and dying. She nursed both Conferderate and Union wounded, including a mini-ball tearing through her sleeve as she was giving a drink to a wounded soldier lying on the ground. At the base of the marker is a small red cross. It is composed of two bricks from her birthplace in Massachusetts. The red bricks in that pattern are certainly appropriate given that Barton was the Founder of the American Red Cross.
Come learn more about her and the other important people at the Battle of Antietam. Schedule a tour today.

On my tour, we spend some time naming the kinds of cannon used at Antietam, the shells shot out of the cannons, and what it took for a artillery battery to set up and the steps needed to actually fire a round. For younger students, this involves role playing. Now is a good time to tour The Antietam Battlefield or the areas at Harpers Ferry where a Union Army surrendered to Stonewall Jackson three days before Antietam. Call or reply to learn about taking a tour soon.

Sunken Road/Bloody Lane. In the preparation for intense fighting here on 9/17/1862, John Gordan told Robert E. Lee, "These men are going to stay here General, till the sun goes down or victory is won!" Years later he said, "Alas! Many of the brave fellows are there now."
This is a good time to schedule a tour of this hallowed place.

The Observation Tower at the Antietam National Battlefield, located at the east end of Bloody Lane. The tower offers great views of the battlefield. To the left is the mortuary cannon for Israel Richardson, severely wounded at a critical moment in the battle. To the right is the monument for Thomas Meagher and The Irish Brigade. So much history, so much valor in one small spot.

Lower Bridge, later known as Burnside Bridge, Antietam Creek, on The Antietam National Battlefield. Thus new name in "honor" of Gen. Ambrose Burnside, noteworthy for his sideburns, who took the best part of the day on Sept. 17, 1862 to get his IX Corps across it despite the fact it was lightly defended by Confederates. His delay contributed to Confederates, despite greatly outnumbered, being able to fight to a draw. This spot is a must visit on any tour of Antietam.

Walking the Cornfield Trail at the Antietam National Battlefield. Scene of the some of the most horrific fighting in the Civil War; 12,000 casualties in little more than 3 hours. ". . .every stalk of in the northern and greater part of the field was cut as closely as could have been done with a knife, and the slain lay in rows precisely as they had stood in their ranks a few moments before." (Gen. Joseph Ho**er).

Monument to the 51st New York Volunteer Infantry at the Antietam Battlefield. Do you know where this mounument is located? Some young students in this picture are about to "re-create" the charge of the 51st over Burnside Bridge. The regiment was organized in New York City in July, 1861 under the leadership of Colonel Edward Ferrero, a former dance instructor. The regiment was very active and served in numerous campaigns and battles throughout the war. Over their four years they lost 378 soldiers killed, mortally wounded, or died of disease. Why not join me for a tour of Antietam Battlefield and we will include this monument as one or our stops.
