Val Jeanty, also known as Val-Inc, incorporates African Haitian musical traditions and acoustics with post-modern electronics to evoke her dreamlike realm of Afro-Electronica, also called Vodou-Electro.

The famous quilt is on view through Indigenous Peoples' Day, October 14, 2024.

Jane Stickle (1817-1896) put three pieces of information In the signature block of her famous quilt: her name (she was clearly proud of her work and wanted recognition), how many pieces are in the quilt (the amount of work she put in to it), and the fact that it was made in war time in 1863.

In 1863 the Civil War was finally starting to turn around for the Union after two years of loss and stalemates. Union forces were victorious at the Battle of Gettysburg in July (Vermont troops figured prominently in the battle).

Women were very much involved in the war effort in both symbolic and practical ways. They created quilts to be sold as raffle items and to be sent to troops for warmth. More importantly, they sent bandages, socks, shirts, and other practical items. Ladies Aid Societies were formed to organize and distribute their work. These societies were important not only for the work that they did, but also because they gave women the opportunity to organize and work outside of the home. Women were traditionally expected to focus their energies on their house and families, but their role as caretakers allowed them to cross boundaries into the public sphere for charitable purposes. Presumably Jane Stickle was also involved with these activities, but unlike her quilt, they were usually anonymous.

The quilt is on view through Indigenous Peoples' Day, October 14, 2024.
