How cute are they!?!?

It's always a good idea to bring a support person to the shoot - they can tell you when you left a hair tie on your wrist, run back to the car for things left behind, carry the different outfits, and pose with you for some sweet photos!

Did you know there's a tiny button on the Nikon Z6 II that will totally shut off your display screen if you accidently hit it and you won't be able to see what you're shooting at all and since you didn't know it was there you won't be able to (initially) figure out how to get the display screen back so you have to do a whole shoot without being able to see what you're photographing?

Yeah, me either. 😅

P.S. A frantic google search in the car after the shoot set things right

Been re-reading the Lord of the Rings series for the... well, let's not get into how many times I've read those books - so some LOTR inspiration may have sneaked in.

Pro-tip: With these many little ones, you're almost NEVER going to get everyone posed "just so" and smiling perfectly. Take a page from this family's book and just roll with it.

It's the first official shoot of the season! It's a good thing we managed to get this in before the cold weather hit... April has certainly been temperamental this year.

P.S. The little one in the bow tie is just EVERYTHING right?!

Month 02
April: Lost

One of the advantages to doing so much walking lately is that I'm discovering hidden pathways, cozy streams, and towering woods in my area. I discovered this location on one such walk.

The water was pretty stagnant so I abandoned my original plan of sticking her in the water barefoot. (See, I AM a caring sister!)

She very nicely offered to go barefoot doing the shoot. "Nah," I said. "I'm pretty sure there's snakes here."
*cue Michelle's panicked look*
Me: "You're wearing rubber boots, they'll protect you. You'll be fine!"
Michelle *paitently*: "That's lightening, dear."

What a good sport.

Special thanks to Eileen Meyer Sklar for the loan of an old train case for the shoot!

This photo had a mood board, but it was primarily inspired by the song Drops On The Lake by Lord Huron

"I get by, but I'm tired of myself
And I doubt that I ever will find someone else
Lonely days fall like drops in the lake of our love

I just want it to be like it was
And I want you to be as you were long ago

I go down to the edge of the lake
Where I wait through the night for the dawn light to break
Memories of yore crash like waves on the shore of my mind
And I pray that the stars will align

I just want us to be who we were long ago
I just want what was
How I yearn for the years we were young and in love

I get by, but it's hard to forget
In the smoke of denial and the fog of regret
Dismal and dark, some like clouds in the sky of my soul
And I hear thunder roll

I look up at the uncaring sky
With a prayer on my lips and a tear in my eye
Oh, how the heart burns like fire in the light of the moon
I just hope you'll be coming back soon

You're my long-lost love
Can we wind back the wheels to the way that it was?"

Once upon a time (say about 13 years ago) my sister and I collaborated on a 52 Weeks Photo Project. If you're not familar, we took one conceptual photo a week for a full year. (Still not sure how we did it. HA!) It was inspiring, exhausting, fun, and stressful all at once.

But 13 years was PROBABLY enough time to recover, right? So we're back. Not with a 52 Weeks challenge (no time for that, my friends) but a 12 Month Challenge: one conceptual shoot a month for the next 12 months.

Beginning with... March: In Bloom
Photo concept was inspired by Jon Foreman's latest single.

"Yesterday's tomb, tomorrow's womb
The dark is long but the dawn is soon
The light that you seek is seeking you
Let the dead seed go and watch it grow brand-new
I'm a desert in bloom"
