We've been waiting on this tour for over two years. Reams of paperwork, angst, anxiety, inboxes flooded with emails, zoom gatherings, a pandemic....through it all we have prevailed. Elevating "Nowhere is a Place" has been my greatest challenge as a tour operator. Patience and tenacity and trust have paid off. This evening, twenty-two intrepid, tenacious, travelers (20 American / 2 Icelandic) head to the bottom of the world to one of the most remarkable places on our planet. I am grateful to the group for having faith in me and most grateful to Matt Daly at Travel Daly in Torrington for his incomparable patience and service through this process and to Daniela Levill at Patagonia Camp for never giving up on us. Here in Iceland, we celebrate Christmas on December 24, Christmas Eve. The official jól celebrations begin at 6 pm on the dot, when all churches throughout the Land ring their bells. Most Icelanders will have the radio on prior to this, and at 20 minutes to six, the radio goes silent. This is a hallowed silence, a liminal time where we pass from the temporal to the sacred. That silence is broken by the bells of the Dómkirkja cathedral ringing over the airwaves—something the Icelanders call "að hringja inn jólin" or "ringing in the yule". At that point everyone embraces and wishes one another Gleðileg jól, or Merry Christmas. ⠀⠀⠀
