One of the most often asked questions we get is “what do you guys do when you’re not fishing”? It usually gets met with blank stares. We’re never not fishing.

3 lakes is coming up this weekend. Though we don’t guide in Granby we do fish it on our days off. Here’s what’s been putting lakers on the ice for us lately.

Top to bottom.

1. 3” pink radical glow tubes. These are working really well in low light/overcast conditions. Charge these up with a UV flashlight before you send em down the hole.

2. 2.5” power tube. I’m not sure what the official name of this color is; we’ve always referred to it as “dirty green ween”. This one puts fish on the ice day in and day out.

3. 2.5” white power tube. This seems to perform best in bright, sunny conditions.

4. 3/8 oz trokar level jig

5. 1/4 oz VMC moon eye jig in UV glow

All of the above should be fished tipped with a small piece of sucker, roughly the size of a postage stamp is all you need. Replace that sucker meat often. 30-50 fow seems to be best zine right now. Most of the action is right at or near the bottom. Start by gently bouncing your jigs right on the bottom. Every so often lift the jig up 2-3’ off the bottom and watch the sonar to see if anything follows you up. If you get a follow, start winding up - as long as that fish is chasing, keep winding. If the fish closes distance with your jig, speed up slightly, this will usually trigger a bite. Also, don’t overlook Grand lake if you’re targeting lakers. We catch some nice, fat fish at Grand and all the same tricks and baits will work there as well.

Good luck to everyone!

People will sometimes travel great distances for the opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime. This crew travelled about 10,000 miles from South Africa to fish with us over the holidays. Ignoring fatigue, jet lag and a bit of culture shock they got right down to business and started bending rods from the word go.
