What’s the REAL Difference Between a three, four, and five-star hotel?⭐
This matters! Especially internationally because the inclusions you come to expect in an American hotel are not always guaranteed in a different country.
Let's break it down:
⭐ 3-Star Hotels – Think Holiday Inn, Courtyard by Marriott. A functional place to sleep for travelers. Expect standard rooms and service that is needed to run the accommodation. Don’t count on perks like room service or a spa, and in other countries it is important to note that this level may not have air conditioning, heating, TVs, or washcloths. This last part is important to keep in mind about your hotel internationally.
⭐ 4-Star Hotels – Think Westin, Hyatt Regency, Kimpton. A step up in style, service & amenities. You’ll find concierge service (my favorite secret weapon to an amazing time in a destination), multiple dining options, upscale décor, pools, & fitness centers. Rooms are typically more spacious with premium bedding. If you are international, a lot of times this is the level hotel that Americans feel the most comfortable having when they imagine what you see in a typical American hotel.
⭐ 5-Star Hotels –A beautiful luxury experience. Expect personalized service, Michelin-star dining, designer interiors, world-class spas, and exclusive experiences. The difference? Every detail is crafted around your comfort, your privacy, and your personal experience.
Pro tip: Star ratings are not always universal! A 4-star hotel in Europe might feel more like a 3.5-star in the U.S. (or vice versa). A hotel can list their own rating so you can arrive and feel very caught off guard at the level of service or cleanliness being off because of this.
