Patienceā¦ for both the group and this great blue heron, paid off in the end.
Great blue herons are excellent fishers. These birds can be spotted around shorelines and in shallow marshes, either slowly wading through the water or waiting patiently for their prey.
Once their next meal is spotted, they will stretch out their long neck and freeze in place. When the moment is right, they strike with their blade-like bill.

Did you know this about grizzlies?
They are also known as browns bears.
Bears Diet Consists of About 90% Vegetarian - When most people think of grizzly bears, they assume they are strictly carnivores. With those teeth and that snarl, they sure can be a threatening predator to some. Surprisingly enough, grizzly bears arenāt carnivores, but omnivores, eating a mix of plants and animals.
Grizzly Bears Can Live to Be 25 Years Old(grizzly 399 was born in 1996 and has denned this winter with her 4 yearling cubs) -
The oldest bear reported recently was estimated at 34 years old. Typically, however, bears live to be 15 ā 25 years old in the wild. Thatās if they donāt find an early end at the hands of humans or climate change.
Grizzly Bears Have a Better Sense of Smell Than Bloodhounds! Even the average dog can smell about 100 times better than a human, and bloodhounds hold the title for the best sniffer in the canine species. It may blow your mind to know that a bearās sense of smell outperforms the bloodhoundās by seven times, which means a bearsā sense of smell is 2,100 times superior to a humanās!
They can outrun the fastest man on the planet! The bears we see in fiction or lazing about in the wild tend to look cumbersome and slow, as most anything weighing nearly a half-ton would. But in a land race, even Olympic champions would be on the losing end. Grizzlies can reportedly run 35 mph, and sustain speeds of up to 28 mph for two miles, faster than Usain Boltās 27.78 miles per hour stride (which he can only sustain for a few seconds).
So when we say to stay AT LEAST 100 yards away from bears, there is a reason!
Millions of visitors come to Yellowstone, every year, to try to see a grizzly bear.
If you are planning a trip, let our trained and knowledgeable guides give you a better chance at seeing these beloved wild creatures.

Did you know..
The size of an elkās antlers depends on the amount of sunlight the elk gets; sunlight causes a boost in testosterone levels, causing the antlers to grow. They can weigh as much as 40 pounds in a full grown male and grow about an inch a day!
Because of its unique timber and volume (you can hear it from miles away), bugling is the best-known form of elk communication. But itās only one of the ways that these animals engage with one another. Researchers have found that elksā anklebones make distinct cracking or popping noises when they walk. We think elk use this sound (at least in part) to tell other elk that theyāre approaching them from behind.
The Shawnee name for elk is wapiti, which means āwhite rump.ā Elk are connected with love and music for many Native Americans, and a well-known tribe legend credits elk with the creation of the first flute.
Strange, but true: Elk can count to 10. How do we know? Scientists have noticed that when a female elk is presented with the choice between a mate with nine antler points and 10 antler points, sheāll almost always select the bull with 10 points. Sheās paying attentionā¦
During the rut, cows and calves form harems with one or two mature bulls.
Weighing in at up to 700 pounds, the North American elk stands as one of the biggest deer species on earth. But donāt think that just because an elk is large that itās slow. A mature bull can run as fast as 40 miles per hour ā theyāve even been able to outrun horses in short races. And thatās not all. Elk can jump eight feet vertically.
Elk are also a top prey for wolves but on the opposite side, elk are commonly known to strike a fatal blow with a swift kick to wolves. They can also impale a wolf with their antlers. There is a reason we say āstay at least 25 yards backā. If itās a human vs an elk, the elk will win.
Are you traveling to Yellowstone and looking for not only a guided tour but an opportunity to learn as you go?

It isnāt always pretty. The wild is downright sad at times. This bison mother died and with that, so did her calf. With death there holds life, however, and her passing brought meals to multiple wolves, a handful of coyotes, a nesting bald eagle, plenty of ravens and at least one grizzly. These are some things to be prepared for come spring. Spring brings Yellowstone a fresh start after the snow begins to melt. The green covers the earthās ground, the babies emerge with their proud sows/mothers, the herds and packs become stronger as the days grow longer. It truly is a magical place. Book your tour today and let us guide you to sightings such as this. Our guides are passionate about wildlife and creating that lasting memory for you and your family.
