This is a favorite float for visitors to Redbud Cottage.

Floating the Buffalo River can be quite relaxing in low to moderate river conditions! The river’s normal flow is 2 miles per hour and when the river is quiet you hear all the sounds of nature - flowing springs, birds singing, insects buzzing, and wildlife frolicking along the riparian area. There is so much beauty along the river, no matter where one paddles!

Spring Creek to the Highway 14 Bridge, also known as Dillard’s Ferry, is an interesting 4.6-mile stretch of river. As one enters the river one of the first things to encounter is a spring trickling on the right descending bank. Paddling over to get a closer look one may notice several fish species enjoying the cooler spring water. Continuing a bit further down past the first bend a reddish bluff can be seen. This is Jackpot Bluff. It is located high up on the left bank. Going down the river further one will pass Stairstep Bluff, a dark bluff on the river’s left. The approximate halfway point of this stretch of river is the confluence with Water Creek, which enters on river left. This is a place where people tend to park their watercraft and explore the cooler creek. Beyond Water Creek, Kimball Bluff is to the right of the river. Next, a sharp bend in the river leads down a riffle called Tie Chute, named for the cable that once transported cut logs from a nearby ridge. Traffic noises can typically be heard from the Highway 14 Bridge as one approaches the last one-mile stretch of river.

The gravel bar on the right descending bank before the bridge is Dillard’s Ferry or the Highway 14 Bridge. To learn more about different stretches of river please click on the link below.
