It has been two years since we welcomed our first guest. Had no idea what we were getting into when we started and had only done long term rentals at another property. We did LOTS of research and just took the plunge. It is hard to rent something that you have put your heart into and are emotionally involved in but it has worked out. Over these two years, we have welcomed over 70 guests across 3 different platforms, a handful of repeat guests, guests that come on referral from other guests and I think one of my favorites, having the honor of being Airbnb's top 1% of homes. Another favorite of mine is reading the messages in our guest books and the sweet messages and sometimes gifts they leave for us. We look forward to hosting you again this year! 🦀

I posted my picture too soon. Apparently he is better at photography than I am or just has a better phone (I am going with the latter). Still doesn't do it justice. Such a beautiful place to be any time of the year, cold or hot.

Almost 2 years into hosting and just received our 38th review on Airbnb...all 5 stars 🤩 Really happy that so many people love the cottage as much as we do! In full transparency, we have 18 reviews on VRBO and all but 1 are 10/10. Unfortunately I guess you can't please everyone. Just over a year ago we got a 4/10 on that platform but everyone else has been happy, oh well! 55 out of 56 5-star or 10/10 reviews isn't bad!

This guy roams our property sometimes. To be honest, in the last 3 years or so this was the first time I had seen him! Our neighbors tell me all the time about a gopher tortoise that likes to walk through the property but we had never seen him before now. While they are cute little creatures, it is important to note that gopher tortoises are protected and you cannot mess with them or their burrows. If you see this guy on the property, or even anywhere else locally, make sure you enjoy from a distance.

This past weekend we got to experience not only a sea turtle eating from the floating dock but he brought a buddy! A MASSIVE sheepshead decided to hang out and have his dinner too! He is so big he's the same size as the sea turtle! The next day the sheepshead was back for more!

I read just now that there have been at least 21 deaths from this monstrous storm so far, mostly from trees. So devastating for so many people but we are so blessed to be safe and only cleanup at our house and cottage. A downed tree in our backyard, a tree down across the street from our house, tons of debris and cleanup at the cottage, a few trees down at my parents blocking their driveway and lots of trees and limbs especially on the island. We did see the kids school sustained damage to the side of the building and we were out of power from about 1:30 this morning to about 10:30 this morning. Thankful for all the lineman, service workers and wonderful neighbors and community. Lots of cleanup but we got this.

Another great festival coming up on the island next weekend!

There are 27 alcohol vendors participating in this year's Island Hop Craft Beer Fest !

18 craft beers, 9 seltzers, wine and spirits. Many of these vendors are first time attendees of Island Hop, so there will be lots of new products to taste. Wow! One of my son's caught a gar in the casting net tonight from the floating dock, first throw in! I always called them alligator gars but I guess there are multiple types of gars so not 100% sure the type of gar. Any guesses?

One of the most common questions we get is, "Are there alligators?" While I would like to say no, absolutely not, we do live in Florida and there is always the rare chance you might see one swimming through the channel; however it is highly unlikely. I did hear of an alligator sighting in the distance swimming down the river a few months ago but they have never been on the property (another reason not to swim from the dock). You are more likely to see these guys in neighborhood ponds, creeks (like Lofton Creek on kayak tours or Egans Creek through the walking trails on the island). Here is another instance that is rare but does happen, at our beaches! I know we saw one at the local beach a few years ago too. This beauty is hanging out at Seaside beach access this morning. Alligators taking a dip in salt water is a normal occurrence and no one should be alarmed. Please keep a wide berth.

Anyone local already knows but for those not nearby, our area has received massive amounts of rain over the last three months, record amounts. Our property is an absolute mess, the walkway to the house and front stoop have been a pool the last few days off and on. Luckily it does drain before it gets close to the house. Our cleaner took this picture of the flooding water the other day. After all the flooded roads, swales and drainage ditches and the flood warnings today, the rain stopped just in time for sunset and didn't disappoint. Hoping we can start to dry out here soon. I know everyone is so done with this rain.

A small catfish and a whiting on the rod and a first for us, a mackerel in the casting net! All released to live another day.

Yesterday brought in more dolphins (and lots of splashing!), another sea turtle (it never gets old) and of course a variety of birds!
