MUSKINGUM VALLEY SYMPHONIC WINDS PERFORMS CANCER BENEFIT CONCERT

NEW CONCORD, OH – FEBRUARY 4, 2024 – The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds will present “A Song for Hope” at Muskingum University on Sunday, February 23 at 3 p.m. “A Song for Hope” is dedicated to cancer survivors and fighters and will raise money for CancerBlows and the Genesis Cancer Care Center. The repertoire for the concert will focus on the variety of emotions one who faces a cancer diagnosis might experience. The two cornerstone works on the program are Brian Balmages’ Stages, which was composed for a music teacher diagnosed with cancer; and A Song of Hope, composed by Peter Meechan for Ryan Anthony, a professional trumpet player who lost his battle with multiple myeloma in 2020.

Interconnecting the musical works on the program will be short stories and reflections shared by cancer survivors as well as cancer statistics and public service announcements about recommended screenings. A trailer for the documentary “Song for Hope: The Ryan Anthony Story,” which chronicles the cancer journey of Ryan Anthony, will also be shown just prior to the performance of A Song of Hope, a work specially composed for Ryan and that features three trumpet soloists.

The concert is loosely based on CancerBlows concerts, which are managed and supported by the Ryan Anthony Foundation. This 501(c)3 foundation was created by Ryan and Niki Anthony to promote cancer awareness and raise money for cancer research. All money raised at the concert will be split between the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and the Genesis Cancer Care Center through CancerBlows/The Ryan Anthony Foundation. The concert will be held in Brown Chapel on the campus of Muskingum University on Sunday, February 23 at 3 p.m.

The Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, a partnership between Muskingum University and the southeastern Ohio region, is comprised of local professional and amateur musicians, in addition to Muskingum students, faculty, and staff. Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds is made possible in part by an investment of public funds from the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically. The Symphonic Winds performs a three concert season each academic year and has also performed as part of the Celebrate New Concord summer concert series and the Salt Fork Arts and Crafts Festival. The Symphonic Winds are under the direction of Dr. David Turrill, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Muskingum University.

For its final concert of the season Zanesville Concert Association is proud to present talent sensation, The Duttons, as they show off their skills on several different instruments and sing beautifully both as soloists and together.

They perform classical, they pop, country, bluegrass and gospel music. Their ability to adapt and play just about any style of music captivates audiences around the world. While inspiration for this amazing group has come from various performing artists, their true source of inspiration lies with Dean and Sheila Dutton, aka Dad and Mom to The Duttons.
