The gorgeous decorations on the minaret were the works of Khiva’s best craftsmen. Once it was clear that the minaret would remain unfinished, they wanted to make the structure feel complete.

Bukhara’s oldest structure, the massive Ark-Citadel is a wonderful sight you cannot miss. The sand-coloured fortress dates way back to the 5th century and was home to over 3000 people. Its massive structure lets us imagine how much of a city in a city it actually was.

Mainly it was known to be the residence of the Bukharan emirs, but also included royal palaces, government offices and stables.
