The multilayer Samarkand flatbread is called Fatir and it is very different from the more famous and heavier Osiyo-non, as well as the light unleavened dough flatbread Chap-chak. At the same time, there are varieties of Fatir itself in size and fillings. These photos show a master class in the traditional Nonvoy bakery on making Jaz-Fatir stuffed with roasted lamb fat. The Haft-Kul or Seven Lakes of Marguzor are located about 50km south of Penjikent among the Fann Mountains in north-western part of Takistan. Starting with Mijgon (Eyelash) at 1640 metres above the sea level and up to the last Hazorchashma (Thousand Springs) at 2400 m, each lake has its own colour and other unique features. Legend says that they were formed by the tears of seven sisters who failed to find their lost father and cried in grief forming this natural wonder.Two-days trip to Marguzor from Samarkand and back can be added to your classic itinerary of Uzbekistan; or three-days extension, which would also include ancient cities of Istaravshan and Khujand in northern Tajikistan, can be included into the longer itinerary between Samarkand and Tashkent / Fergana Valley. .

Our tour-operators not only handle bookings and all travel arrangements, but sometimes even act as models. Yesterday, the award-winning photographer Julian Elliott Landscape and Travel Photography conducted an amazing photo shoot with our colleague Marjona at the Registan Square.
Unbeknownst to Julian, we have at least a dozen other beautiful tour-operators and guides who would grace the covers of magazines and are capable of organizing a fashion show on their own :)

Anusha-Khan Hamam is a unique 17th century structure inside the ancient citadel of Khiva. Built virtually underground to ensure maximum heat retention in the complex water supply system of the various compartments of this bathhouse, only small domes are visible from above, in which there used to be holes for the pe*******on of light and natural ventilation.
The figure of Khan Anush itself is also unique. According to legend, being the tenth child of the ruler of Khiva, he hid for a long time under the guise of a girl. But when his father was captured by the Emir of Bukhara, and the other sons of the Khan were in no hurry to rescue him, it was Anusha who saved his father, surprising the Bukhara court when he threw off his woman’s attire and introduced himself as a valiant prince.
In real history, Khan Anusha is known for strengthening the possessions of Khiva and even capturing Samarkand for some time!

Shashlik, as the skewered kebabs known across Central Asia and Caucasus, has many variations. From straightforward marinated meat cubes grilled in some rustic road teahouse to the assorted platter by some fine restaurant in Tashkent. And each region of Uzbekistan has its own style of shashlik, usually reflected on size or combination, as well as "secrete marinades" used to achieve specific taste and texture.
Lately, many restaurants have adapted to modern preferences and offer vegetarian variations too.

Craftswomen in Uzbekistan work in a wide variety of areas of traditional art, including ceramics. For example, like this "naqqosh" girl in the 1st pic., who paints intricate ornaments on glazed plates in Rishtan. Or the Samarkand lady potter in the fifth generation (pic. 2), who creates terracotta dragons. And of course, the famous ceramics painting artist in Tashkent, Riimma Gazalieva in the 3rd picture.
You can meet all of the featured ladies (and many others) and have exclusive master-classes when we tailor your own tour itinerary of Uzbekistan.. #陶器 #陶芸 #旅行

Tashkent Metro stations are like the Glittering Caves of Aglarond in the Lord of the Rings, each is different with spectacular domes, columns and walls; rich in colours, stones and crystals. The only comforting difference is that this underground network is in Uzbekistan's capital city, so you shouldn't ride far to the edge of Rohan, passing through the Helm's Deep to the White Mountains :-) . But Tashkent Metro can be a good start of your adventure in the heart of the fable Silk Road!

Astro-tourism is relatively new in Uzbekistan, but several unique high-altitude observatories provide a good opportunity for amateurs to combine familiarization with scientific aspects, night stargazing and plunge into the nature and cultural authenticity of remote areas at the same time.
One of such places is the Maidanak Observatory, located in the Gissar Mountains at an altitude of 2,650 meters above sea level and consisting of two separate buildings (small and big). This observatory is well known among the specialists, because local astronomers discovered, with the help of its powerful telescope, over 80 asteroids, four comments and a small planet, which was named Samarkand.
Stargazers would be delighted by the clear dark sky (nearby rustic lodge and yurt are handy).
Not far from the observatory is the famous Sufi shrines of Katta-Langar village, and 45 km away is the old Kitab Observatory, with an interesting museum and the opportunity to watch the telescope in the evening.

The beautiful Registan Square was my original inspiration to visit Uzbekistan. I remember seeing an image of this truly stunning square and just had to go. The architecture and culture that is around the square is truly breathtaking.

The image itself was captured using the following gear Canon UK Canon France Canon Imaging Asia
Canon 5D Mark IV
Canon 24mm TS-E tilt shift lens to ensure that everything remained upright

Benro France Benro UK
My trusty Benro Mach 3 TMA38CL carbon fibre tripod and GD3WH geared head kept everything stable.

And if you’re interested in photographing Uzbekistan then join me at the end of a September for a GUARANTEED departure to this amazing country. You can find all the details here: https://www.julianelliottphotography.com/product/uzbekistan-photography-tour-oct-2023/

Local types of fried turnovers and dough food were always considered as fast and cheap (thus very popular) street-food favorites across Central Asia. Among the most common are Cheburek (with minced meat filling), Bogursak (puffy dough), Kok-bichak (greens and onion filling), Chalpak (fried flatbread), Gumma (usually filled with offal, but more elaborate in Khorezmian cuisine) and some others. But lately, they also found their way into the menus of fine dining restaurants. Some, like Kuranty Bar in Tashkent even experimented creating this simply gorgeous "Shaurmek" featured in the first picture!. #食物 #屋台の食べ物 #高級料理 #探検

The traditional dances of Bukhara and Khorezm often use "qayroq" - a local version of castanets, consisting of a polished stone and an iron plate. They not only serve to create the perfect complement and rhythmic accompaniment for the dancers. Qayroqs also help to imitate the sounds of the surrounding nature, for example, the trill of singing birds. When tailoring our itineraries, we often include special demonstrations of the Lazgi dance in Khiva and Bazm in Bukhara. And almost always, our guests themselves join the dance to the irresistible sounds of qayroqs! #踊り #舞踊 #伝統 #文化 #旅行

Poi-Kalon complex is a postcard symbol of Bukhara and a must see place for your nightwalk in the World Heritage historic centre of this noble city. Consisting of the iconic minaret, huge mosque and two madrasahs (incl. famous Miri-Arab), Poi-Kalon is an important site of Islamic culture and education, which was active even during the Soviet times.
