SAINT LUCIA'S PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NATIONAL HOLIDAY

Saint Lucia is set to erupt in celebration as Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has announced plans to honor Julien Alfred’s historic victory in the women’s 100m at the Paris Olympics with a national holiday.

The announcement, made during a SportsMax interview, has sent waves of excitement across the island.

“Everyone is asking me about a holiday,” Prime Minister Pierre said with a smile. “All I can say is, yes, there will be a holiday.”

Though the exact date and details are yet to be finalized, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ernest Hilaire revealed that the government is focused on supporting Alfred as she prepares for the 200m race.

“Right now, our priority is to give Julien our full support as she aims for another gold. After that, the Cabinet will convene to decide how best to celebrate her incredible achievement,” Dr Hilaire stated.

He also emphasized that the government intends to involve various stakeholders in the decision-making process. “We want to ensure that the celebration is fitting for such a momentous occasion. We’ll listen to suggestions from all corners and make an announcement that reflects the pride and joy of our entire nation.”

Julien Alfred’s dazzling performance in Paris has captured the hearts of Saint Lucians around the world.

On Saturday, she clocked an impressive 10.72 seconds in the 100m final, leaving her competitors in the dust, particularly Sha’Carri Richardson, and setting a new national record. Her victory not only marks Saint Lucia’s first-ever Olympic gold medal but also solidifies her status as a national hero and a force to be feared on the track.

On Sunday morning, fresh off her victory the day before, Alfred effortlessly won her 200m heat with a time of 22.41 seconds, advancing to the semifinals with ease.

With her sights set on another gold, Alfred is the talk of the town with the entire country behind her.

“The upcoming national holiday promises to be a day of unity, pride, and jubilation—a fitting tribute to Saint Lucia’s golden girl,” remarked one Saint Lucian woman living in the United States expressed to Loop News.

The CANOUAN GROUP is an informal organization that started exactly a year ago, in July 2023. The objective of the group (an amalgamation of former and current residents of Canouan, and descendants of the island), is to share their collective skills, to facilitate the future growth of the Canouan community. The group is based in the USA.
Since its inception, the group has sent books and other educational supplies to the Canouan Government School, medals and other sports equipment to the Canouan Secondary School, and medical supplies to the Canouan Clinic.
Immediately after hurricane Beryl, the group mobilized to send supplies to P&G Soul Food Restaurant, Tranquility Restaurant (Anekia’s Kitichen), assisted with the purchase of gasoline for the generators at some of the Hurricane Shelters, and facilitated in Customs clearing and delivery of supplies to the Clinic.
In the coming months the group is poised to send further aid to the island. They will continue to liaise closely with the members of the group, who reside on the island, to ensure that the aid is specific to the needs of the islanders and fairly distributed.
