Friday Fact, Fables and Folklore

“Local folklore says the islands hold mysteries after dark!”

What Are Jumbies?

Jumbies are mischievous spirits found in Caribbean legends, including in the British Virgin Islands. Unlike friendly ghosts, jumbies are often troublemakers, playing tricks on the living, stealing small items, or even luring people into danger. They are said to roam at night, and those who cross their path may feel chills, hear whispers, or even see shadowy figures moving in the darkness.

How to Spot a Jumbie

Jumbies can take many forms. Some appear as people, but with something “off”—like backward feet, glowing eyes, or missing shadows. Others disguise themselves as animals, such as dogs, goats, or birds. If you ever see an animal acting strangely or staring at you too long, locals might warn you that it could be a jumbie in disguise!

How to Protect Yourself from Jumbies

Islanders have passed down several ways to keep jumbies at bay:

• Turn your clothes inside out – Jumbies get confused easily, so they’ll waste time trying to figure it out.
• Leave a bowl of salt or rice by your door – Jumbies are said to be obsessive counters, so they’ll be too busy counting each grain to bother you.
• Avoid whistling at night – It’s believed that whistling can attract jumbies to you.
• Walk backward into your house – This prevents a jumbie from following you inside.
• Keep light around – Jumbies prefer the darkness, so keeping a lantern or flashlight on can scare them away.

Jumbie Stories in the BVI

Many elders in the BVI have stories of jumbie encounters—like shadowy figures following night travelers, eerie laughter in the trees, or strange voices calling their names when no one is there. Some say jumbies linger near old ruins, graveyards, or deep in the forests of Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

This folklore has been around for generations, blending African, Indigenous, and European beliefs. Today, jumbies remain a big part of Caribbean culture, even inspiring Jumbie Dances, where people dress up as spirits in bright costumes and dance to scare them away.
