We had to share this Winning review from one recent guests.

Thank you to Alison and Andre for another AMAZING vacation!! In reflecting on our lovely time together, I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful every single detail of our stay on the Turquoise Turtle was!
Even after having not seen them for two years, we were immediately greeted like family and brought aboard to our home at sea! The 50 foot catamaran is perfectly appointed with everything you could want and need to make your sailing adventure a success. We spent my husband's 40th birthday on the Turquoise Turtle in 2023 and returned 2 years later for his 42nd. Alison and Andre made sure to plan a trip with some wonderful new stops and some old favorites! We were able to travel to Cooper Island where we had a lovely swim and rum tasting. We then traveled on to Virgin Gorda where we enjoyed a delicious not to be missed meal at Coco Maya for my husband's birthday. This was followed by a morning trip to the Baths, then a lovely sail to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, visiting Oil Nut Bay for lunch and stopping by the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock for happy hour. Despite high and somewhat unfavorable winds, Andre was able to safely and successfully navigate our way to Anageda, where we had an amazing trip exploring the island and bar hopping with Andre and Alison as personal tour guides. We had a delicious lobster dinner at the Wonky Dog then set sail early the next morning for a day of fun at Jost van D**e. Alison arranged for us to have a massage at the floating spa in White Bay; what a treat! We enjoyed our final day at Norman Island, capped off with a fabulous snorkel, a trip to Pirate's Bight and a jump off the famous W***y T!
Andre and Alison went above and beyond to make our trip special; Andre by ensuring we traveled to all of our desired destinations and introducing us to a few new ones, then Alison preparing a few special birthday surprises and cooking the most amazing meals!! We literally loved every meal that she prepared for us! She truly is a gourmet chef!
We are already planning our return visit in 2026 and must say despite all of the wonderful experiences mentioned above, Andre and Alison themselves are what make the trip incredible and unforgettable. Their kind hospitality, going above and beyond to ensure our every need was met at any time, is unsurpassable! They truly are the most amazing people! We SO enjoyed the evening cocktail hour(s) and getting to know each of them, sharing stories of their interesting lives and travels! We not only feel as though we shared an amazing vacation with them but also cultivated a wonderful friendship! I am already counting the days until we return next year.
Do not hesitate to book with the Turquoise Turtle; this wonderful duo will not disappoint!
Thank you again to Andre and Alison for being not only incredible hosts, but such amazing people!

The Ghostly Cow of Anegada and the Legend of Cow Wreck Beach

Long before Anegada became known for its stunning white-sand beaches and legendary lobster feasts, it was the setting for one of the Caribbean’s strangest ghost stories—the tale of the ghostly cow.

As the story goes, centuries ago, a Spanish galleon met its fate on the treacherous Horseshoe Reef, carrying a cargo of gold, spices… and a herd of cows. While the ship’s crew scrambled to survive, most of the cattle weren’t so lucky, swept away by the waves. But one stubborn cow, against all odds, managed to swim through the surf and make it to shore.

For years, islanders and passing sailors swore they saw this lone cow wandering the salt ponds and dunes of Anegada, surviving on the island’s sparse vegetation. Some even claimed it had grown larger than any normal cow, its white coat glowing under the Caribbean moonlight.

Then one day, the cow simply disappeared. No one knew what became of it—had it finally succumbed to the wild, or was it something more mysterious?

Not long after, strange sightings began. Fishermen, beachcombers, and even the occasional rum-soaked sailor reported seeing a ghostly white cow standing at the water’s edge, staring out to sea. Whenever someone tried to get close, it would vanish into thin air. Some believed it was the spirit of the shipwrecked cow, forever searching for its lost herd. Others took it as a warning—those who saw the ghostly cow often found storms brewing just over the horizon.

Today, the legend lives on in the name Cow Wreck Beach, one of Anegada’s most famous spots. While the beach itself is named after the cattle bones and debris that once washed ashore from old shipwrecks, locals will tell you the ghostly cow still lingers. Some say, late at night, if you listen closely between the crash of the waves and the rustle of the sea grape trees, you might just hear a soft, lonely moo drifting through the salty breeze.

Or maybe that’s just the rum talking.

Either way, if you find yourself at Cow Wreck Beach Bar, raise a glass to the most legendary cow in the British Virgin Islands—real or not, it sure makes for a great story.

André & Alison

What an amazing adventure! The food , the hiking recommendations, the wonderful days spent out on the water or lounging around reading and napping with drinks on the trampoline were just fabulous. We couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the spectacular islands of the BVI and we’ll spend endless time freezing our asses off back home dreaming about our time spent on the Turtle with the two of you!
You’ve definitely convinced me it’s time to get my diving cert and I’d love to figure out a way to come back and finish my certification with you guys before you retire!
Best wishes from the great white north.

Friday Fact, Fables and Folklore

“Local folklore says the islands hold mysteries after dark!”

What Are Jumbies?

Jumbies are mischievous spirits found in Caribbean legends, including in the British Virgin Islands. Unlike friendly ghosts, jumbies are often troublemakers, playing tricks on the living, stealing small items, or even luring people into danger. They are said to roam at night, and those who cross their path may feel chills, hear whispers, or even see shadowy figures moving in the darkness.

How to Spot a Jumbie

Jumbies can take many forms. Some appear as people, but with something “off”—like backward feet, glowing eyes, or missing shadows. Others disguise themselves as animals, such as dogs, goats, or birds. If you ever see an animal acting strangely or staring at you too long, locals might warn you that it could be a jumbie in disguise!

How to Protect Yourself from Jumbies

Islanders have passed down several ways to keep jumbies at bay:

• Turn your clothes inside out – Jumbies get confused easily, so they’ll waste time trying to figure it out.
• Leave a bowl of salt or rice by your door – Jumbies are said to be obsessive counters, so they’ll be too busy counting each grain to bother you.
• Avoid whistling at night – It’s believed that whistling can attract jumbies to you.
• Walk backward into your house – This prevents a jumbie from following you inside.
• Keep light around – Jumbies prefer the darkness, so keeping a lantern or flashlight on can scare them away.

Jumbie Stories in the BVI

Many elders in the BVI have stories of jumbie encounters—like shadowy figures following night travelers, eerie laughter in the trees, or strange voices calling their names when no one is there. Some say jumbies linger near old ruins, graveyards, or deep in the forests of Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

This folklore has been around for generations, blending African, Indigenous, and European beliefs. Today, jumbies remain a big part of Caribbean culture, even inspiring Jumbie Dances, where people dress up as spirits in bright costumes and dance to scare them away.
