Villa Mirabella - Virgin Gorda, BVI, Vacation Home

Figuring out how to get to Virgin Gorda is some times the hardest part. We usually fly to St Thomas and then take the local ferry to the BVI. If you travel on Saturdays there is a direct ferry from St Thomas to Virgin Gorda, on other days you’ll have to switch ferries in Roadtown Tortolla. Some people find it is worth the expense to take a water taxi and some fly directly to Beef island and take a ferry from there. Virgin Gorda has an airport (VIJ) but not a lot of flights.

NEOC ACTIVATED AT LEVEL 1 FOR TS ERNESTO

The Virgin Islands is currently under a hurricane watch in association with Tropical Storm Ernesto, which means that hurricane conditions are possible in our area within the next 12 hours.

Governor Daniel Pruce has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre at Level 1, which is a monitoring phase.

Residents should rush to complete storm preparations by this afternoon and prepare to remain in a safe space tonight and tomorrow as the storm passes. Non-essential government offices will remain closed on Wednesday, August 14.

Residents should also follow updates from the Department of Disaster Management.

Day 1 of the ILCA7 races completed for Thad Lettsome 🇻🇬

Rounding the first mark in an impressive 11th place, Thad went on to finish 38/43 in race 2 for an overall position of 40/43.

On racing in the top 12 of the fleet upwind to the first mark, Lettsome said, “It shows that I can do it, but I just have to work on some little things and a couple of decisions, because the group ahead of me was just that further ahead and they didn’t end up in the mix that I did. I knew I was doing well so I am encouraged to hear that I was 11th rounding the mark and plan to do it again tomorrow.”

Races 3 and 4 are scheduled to take place in the afternoon on Friday, August 2.

This Spring celebrates Mirabella’s 40th birthday 🥳 The one group of pictures are from Thanksgiving of 1978, on our first trip to Virgin Gorda and the trip when we bought the land. The rest of the photos are from Easter of 1984 and our first trip down right after construction (mostly 😂) finished. Mirabella was designed by Chris Yates and built by Sam Leonard. A lot has changed over the decades but nothing can change our love for Mirabella, Virgin Gorda and the BVI! 🌴🍍❤️

Every one thinks Winter for a Virgin Gorda vacation and I get it, because escaping the cold is a real thing! But my personal favorite time of year on Virgin Gorda is Spring! The weather calms down. Temperature are in the low 80’s with calmer trade winds. The water warms up and is calm making perfect conditions for snorkeling or just floating! And let’s face it the weather in most of North America and Europe is still pretty unpredictable.

Because Virgin Gorda is a relatively small island, grazing is communal. When I was a kid cows, goats, sheep and even sometimes horses wandered the island eating where they could find a tasty meal. As an animal lover it was always a thrill when they picked our yard. Some time in the’90’s, as the human population grew, the cows were rounded up, the few horses gone. Still today, there are small herds of goats and sheep making their rounds. Not always great for the landscaping 😂 but I enjoy them anyway.
