1733 Revolution- On This Day- March 7, 1734 – The Englishman John Maddox from St. Christopher, St. Kitts, arrived on St. John with 70 men. Finally putting in action his and Governor Gardelin's plans from January 13th and February 16th, 1734.

Maddox intended to trick the freedom fighters into boarding his vessel by telling them he was on his way to Puerto Rico and needed crew, but really, he planned to take them to St Thomas and re-enslave them. Maddox planned to deliver half of the captives to the Danish West Indian government and keep the other half to be enslaved under his own control. However, Maddox mistakenly anchors on the north shore in Waterlemon Bay with two ships and 70 men, instead of his intended destination of Coral Bay. The freedom fighters capitalized on his mistake and attacked; wounding 5 and killing 3 of Maddox men.

The lock pictured below once held the bars shut on the detention cell at Annaberg Plantation.

On this day, November 05, 1840, a man named Joe Popp escaped from Annaberg’s cell and made his way to freedom on nearby Tortola. With his escape, he left behind a legend that inspired St. John’s enslaved community to sing songs in his honor.
