Nurse sharks are slow-moving bottom-dwellers and are harmless to humans. However, they have very strong jaws filled with thousands of tiny, serrated teeth, and could bite defensively if stepped on or bothered. Typically born during the winter, they are about 1 foot in length at birth and grow 4-6 inches a year in length, less as they get larger. The time to reach adulthood and mating can be as long as 15-20 years, at which time they are 7-14 feet in total length. Nurse sharks are generally bottom feeders, preferring crustaceans such as lobsters, crabs, and shrimp. They will also feed on fish, sea urchins, small stingrays, and squid. Nurse sharks are sometimes preyed upon by other sharks, such as tiger, bull, hammerhead, and lemon sharks. 🦈🦈🦈🐠 #sharkweek
