Beautiful and rare images of Ha Giang about 100 years ago, set in Ha Giang city, D**g Van town and some other locations. The photos show us a beautiful and peaceful Ha Giang, until now, although tourism has helped develop life here, the colors, atmosphere and rhythm of this land. Because we Ha Giang people are like that, honest, friendly and hospitable.

The documents were restored in color by photographer Pham Huong at Ha Giang Photos.

Lao Xa Silver Village – Where the Mountains Echo with Craftsmanship

Hidden deep in the mystical D**g Van Karst Plateau, Lao Xa Village is more than just a scenic stop – it’s a living museum of Hmong silver craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Here, amid ancient stone houses and the tranquil whisper of mountain winds, Hmong artisans still forge silver by hand, just as their ancestors did. You’ll witness the rhythmic tapping of hammers, the glow of heated metal, and the steady hands shaping intricate bracelets, earrings, and heirloom keepsakes. Each piece of jewelry isn’t just an ornament – it’s a cultural story carved in silver.

What makes Lao Xa truly magical?
It’s the harmony between tradition and resilience. In tiny workshops lit by natural light, local craftsmen use primitive yet precise tools. They melt silver, shape it, carve fine tribal patterns, and create stunning pieces right in front of your eyes. Visitors are not only observers – you’re invited into their world. Feel the textures, hear their stories, and even try your hand at simple engraving if you’re curious.

Why you shouldn’t miss this stop on your Ha Giang Loop adventure with Opi?
Because Lao Xa offers a soulful contrast to the wild mountain roads – a chance to slow down, connect with local people, and take home more than just a souvenir: a story.

Ha Giang Road Trip

I'm Opi, I am from the Tay ethnic minority in a small commune of Hà Giang province, i'm working with 6 of my friends also Red Dao and Hmong ethnic minority. We are building a project about protecting culture and developing responsible tourism. Right now Hà Giang is one of the provinces that is most developing about tourism every year and getting more and more tourists. For that reason, our project wants to establish a connection between tourists and the local people. This will benefit both of them; travelers will have the opportunity to discover Northern Vietnam from the inside with all its traditions and way of life and at the same time local people get more possibilities of income. These local people are not sponsored or working with travel agencies, we chose them because we thought they were welcoming, open-minded and motivated about sharing their culture.
