"At the end of the 19th century, in order to deal with the fighting movements of the Vietnamese people, the French colonialists strengthened their repression apparatus: adding police forces, completing the court system and building a network of prisons. prison. In 1896, on the land of Phu Khanh village - Vinh Xuong district - Tho Xuong district - Hanoi, the French colonialists built Hoa Lo prison. This is one of the largest prisons of the French colonialists in Indochina.
From a famous pottery craft village, the French colonialists turned the land of Hoa Lo into a place of physical and mental imprisonment and exile of thousands of Vietnamese patriotic and revolutionary soldiers. Living in an imperialist prison, with a harsh detention regime and a life of exile, patriotic and revolutionary soldiers still maintained their morale, turning the prison into a school and a place to disseminate revolutionary theory. Many people have cleverly escaped from prison and returned to the people and organizations, making worthy contributions to the cause of national liberation.
There were many Vietnamese patriotic and revolutionary leaders detained by the French colonialists in Hoa Lo prison, typically: Phan Boi Chau, Luong Van Can, Nguyen Quyen, Ho Tung Mau, Nguyen Luong Bang... and five General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam includes: Nguyen Van Cu, Truong Chinh, Le Duan, Nguyen Van Linh and Do Muoi.
In October 1954, after the North was liberated, the Vietnamese Government managed and temporarily used Hoa Lo prison to detain law violators. However, from August 5, 1964 to March 31, 1973, Hoa Lo prison was also used to detain American pilots who were shot down while bombing North Vietnam. During this period, American pilots gave Hoa Lo the humorous name "Hanoi Hilton". American pilots detained here included Douglas Peter Peterson, who later became the first US Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and John Mc Cain - currently a US Senator.
In 1993, to meet the economic development requirements of the Capital, the Government of Vietnam decided to change the use purpose of Hoa Lo prison. The remaining southeast part is preserved, restored, and embellished to be classified as a historical relic of Hanoi. Here there is a memorial to Vietnamese patriotic and revolutionary soldiers who heroically sacrificed their lives at Hoa Lo prison for the independence and freedom of the nation."
