THE MANY FACES OF HANOI

Hanoi’s beauty lies not only in its glittering skyline but also in the impeccable interweaving of contrasting scenes. Here, it is common to spot a tiny ancient pagoda next to a towering modern building, a traditional open-air market beside a luxury shopping mall, and an old ferry pier steps away from a bustling metro station. Whenever you wander the streets of Hanoi, you often feel as though you are traveling through different worlds.

On one side of the bay, skyscrapers and shopping centers dominate the bustling Central district. Just a short trip away, I find myself standing amidst stilt houses over the water in peaceful fishing village.

Amidst the hectic pace and soaring high-rises, Hanoi also offers surprising “emergency exits” to nature. Not too far from the bustling Red River Middle Island metro station, you can immerse oneself in the tranquil atmosphere of Red River bank.

A transforming city

Hanoi is often described as a peaceful city with a rich cultural heritage. Today, Hanoi still maintains its familiar charm, its bustling ancient streets interwoven with inherently tranquil places. However, for those who are closely watching, Hanoi is undergoing a dramatic transformation.

If you take a moment to observe, you'll notice that life here never stops, from early morning until late at night. As an architectural and landscape photographer, I love to see Hanoi in the vibrant light of modern life, where you can observe and deeply feel the colors and lights of a city. The two most important factors for this are choosing the right time and location for observation.

The best time to witness this transformation is during the "golden hour," a period just after sunset when the sky displays hues of red and gold, transitioning into the "blue hour" when the sky turns a light shade of blue, visible to the naked eye as well as through photography equipment.

The journey begins from Hoan Kiem District, the center of Hanoi. This area preserves many ancient beauties with its charming old streets and numerous historical and cultural landmarks. Around Hoan Kiem Lake, there are many rooftop cafes, and from here, you can see the contrast between the serenity of the Old Quarter and the modernity of the high-rise buildings in the distance toward the west side of the city, illuminated by the setting sun.

Riding under the shade of trees along Phan Dinh Phung Street to the northwest leads to Ba Dinh District, with spacious tree-lined avenues. Thanh Nien Road runs along with West Lake on one side and Truc Bach Lake on the other, both serene and picturesque.

Despite the hustle and bustle of urban life, Hanoi's streets yield romantic, familiar, and idyllic moments that captivate both locals and tourists.

Four seasons

With her street corners and rows of trees, Hanoi is always on my mind. Her streets are a source of pride thanks to their colourful and blissful trees.

Queenly Hanoi is at her best in the autumn. The charming fragrance of flowers spreads through the sky. Milkwood flowers flourish every autumn. I long for a nighttime stroll through quiet streets infused with the lingering scent of milkwood bliss:
“My lady, it’s Hanoi streets
You gave my orchids bliss, you gave me my milkwoods bliss”

Apart from milkwood flowers, Hanoi boasts streets where orchid trees spread their peaceful green shade and sweet bliss far and wide. The fragrance of orchid trees on an autumn morning is special to Hanoi. The scent of orchid tree blossoms appears when the first autumn chills prance through the city. Strolling under dense orchid trees lining Dien Bien Phu Street or the end of Tran Phu Street, all my worldly sorrows give way to insatiable nostalgia and longing.

The autumn scatters falling golden leaves. There are early wintry mornings when trees cast their golden leaves onto quiet corners. Bleak, dreary winter days plunge Hanoi into her signature ancient and grave atmosphere. Winter is a time for contemplation and reflection on a fading past. Those old days are evident on roofs blanketed with thick moss under scraggy trees. Cold breezes storm past, leaving bare branches to quiver in winter's wrath. However, these trees still await a new spring with strong vigour.

The spring fairy comes swiftly, scattering little drizzles that barely wet the new clothes of passers-by. Warm early spring days fuel a new vitality and little buds blossom. Spring makes the cityscape of Hanoi more enchanting than ever. February and Tết can be felt with gorgeous peach blossoms that wave their little petals to greet the spring. One day in March, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the pure white Tonkin legume flowers. Hanoi in March prides herself on romantic Bauhinias. A quintessentially Northwestern species, bauhinias are widely found in Hanoi. Bac Son Streets, flanked by two rows of purple bauhinias, rekindle the flames of romance in loving couples. In April, Hanoi falls into deep contemplation as her streets are covered with thick layers of golden leaves. This is when the dracontomelon trees change their attire. Their golden leaves stir up quiet corners of Ly Nam De, Dien Bien Phu and Tran Phu Streets. The finest scene is on Phan Dinh Phung Street. This season is ephemeral.

The honey sunshine of May gives Hanoi another radiant face. Purple giant crape myrtle and red flamboyant flowers – two queens calling out for summer. Flowers brighten bleak streets, stir up glinting lakes and serve as memory-keepers for students. Giant crape myrtle, flamboyant flowers, golden poiciana, white clausena excavata and tiny dracontomelum flowers help to spread breathtaking emotions through narrow streets drenched in broiling summer sunshine.

Hanoi's seasons and flowers are ever-changing. Seasons walk past this beloved city, leaving so many fond memories.

What other gifts does autumn bestow on Hanoi?

Have you ever seen fields of reeds as white as a scene in a fairy tale, on the alluvial strip of land in the middle of the Red River, below Long Bien Bridge, at the end of October? Long ago, our ancestors looked to changes in living flora to forecast the weather. The reeds’ blooming indicates that the stormy season has passed, and a transcendent autumn is coming.

We long to travel along the country’s winding roads in the autumn, to thoroughly understand the true beauty of Vietnam. Our feelings of wonder will teach us to appreciate life’s precious values - a remedy in this peaceful season.
