Join us on an exciting mountain biking trip in the breathtaking remote territory of Hoang Su Phi district in the mountains of Northern Vietnam

Our tour is not for the type of rider who wants to speed through a full day of cycling in off road, single trek , dirt trails and do nothing but ride-sleep-eat. Our tour is for riders who want the opportunity to meet the locals, have time to stop for photos and to ‘smell the roses’, all while enjoying a ride along dirt trails that have connected villages and villagers for generations. The tour though will have one day that is a race/timed stage. This is the last day and is only really to ensure riders get back to Thong Nguyen asap as we will have a bus waiting to take them back to Hanoi.

This package will target riders who are medium level of fitness, and who are confident riding a bicycle on uneven and dirt surfaces. Our team will ensure all tour participants are well looked after. Tour Description

Ride on the narrow dirt single trails that have been connecting villages and villagers for generations. With most of the single track sections ranging from undulating to downhill, your face will be sore from smiling as you traverse down the side of some of Hoang Su Phi’s most picturesque rice-terraced mountainsides. For this ride we have reserved most of the serious climbing for the sealed roads, allowing you to get in the rhythm and recover for the next fun single track descent to come. With daily distances ranging from 20-30km there will be plenty of time to enjoy time off the bike after the day’s ride, and stop along the way for photos or just to take in the scenery. Our tour is not for the type of rider who wants to speed through a full day of cycling and do nothing but ride-sleep-eat. Our tour is for riders who want the opportunity to meet the locals, have time to stop for photos and to ‘smell the roses’, all while enjoying a ride along dirt trails.

The tour will include one timed stage on Day 3 (7km Individual Time Trial) with prizes offered to the top 3 place betters.

Overview

This is a wonderful tour that takes us three nations all with very distinct cultures, cuisine, peoples and traditions. As a way to experience the richness and variety of Indochina this cycling holiday comes highly recommended.
Highlights

Hanoi’s characterful and bustling Old Quarter, the wonderful laid back Laotian town of Luang Prabang, and then the contrast of the more Westernised Thailand. Waving children in roadside villages, a boat journey on the mighty Mekong river, the peoples of three fascinating lands. But perhaps above all is the wonderful rural cycling through remote villages and across jungle covered hillsides. Riding on through fertile valleys of rice and grass where buffalo graze. And views of pastoral spender, with Buddhist temples all glitter and sparkle in the light of the tropical sun.
Joining instructions

You will be meet on arrival at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and driven to our joining hotel. The group will typically meet early evening for a pre-tour briefing. Full details will be sent with your final joining instructions.

ESSENTIAL – PLEASE NOTE: This tour begins in Vietnam and ends in Thailand. For most people this will mean flying into Hanoi and home from Bangkok. From Chiang Rai to Bangkok there are many flights daily with ticket prices as low as about $35 for the one hour domestic flight. Please contact us if you need further information.
Difficulty

The tour has a little over 1000KMS of cycling spread across 11 riding days. With the longest day being 125KMS the distances are quite achievable by a reasonably fit cyclist. There are however plenty of long climbs on this tour, some of up to 20KMS in duration. On the final day in Lao, and on the Thai sections, there are some steep gradients well in excess of 10%, and at times nudging as much as 20%. Anyone considering this tour must therefor be a keen climber and happy in the hills. However, there is always a support vehicle to hand to carry both you and your bicycle if you feel the going is beyond what for you is enjoyable. This is, after all, a holiday. Please feel free to contact us if you wish to discuss the conditions of this tour.
Accommodation

The accommodation on this tour is a mixed bag. In the bigger towns we will stay in well appointed comfortable resorts. However in some more remote areas our accommodation may be more basic as we lodge in local guest-houses and eat in local restaurants. In these off the beaten track towns we use the best accommodation available, and generally this will include AC and ensuite hot shower bathrooms with a Western toilet. However, one must be prepared to occasionally stay in more basic accommodation.

Most of our hotels come equipped with a roof and walls.

Cao Bang Province is located in the Far North- East, shares borders with China on the north and east, Bac Kan and Lang Son provinces on the south, and Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang provinces on the west. The topography is complicated so inter-transportation is limited.

Cao Bang is the capital of Cao Bang province in northern Vietnam. While unremarkable in and of itself, Cao Bang is an easy-going gateway to the surrounding lakes, minority villages, karst peaks, caves, and the Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border. For those tired of the tourist circuit of coastal Vietnam, Cao Bang is also a refreshing glimpse into a city that exists solely on its own terms.

Cao Bang is 272km north of Hanoi following National Highway No.3. Cao Bang has National Highway No.4B and 3 linking to Lang Son, Bac Kan, Ha Giang provinces and to China. There are direct buses from Hanoi, Thai Nguyen and Lang Son.
Cao Bang Weather

Cao Bang has temperate climate. There are 4 seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. The average temperature is 25 – 28oC in summer and 16 -17oC in winter. Snow sometimes falls in winter on high mountains such as Trung Khanh, Tra Linh.
Cao Bang Tourism

The cool weather combines with many high mountains, beautiful sightseeings to form the convenient for relaxing tour and discovery tour. Famous sites include Thang Hen Mountainous Lake in Tra Linh, Ban Gioc Fall and Nguom Ngao Cave in Trung Khanh. Among of them, Ban Gioc Fall probably is one of most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam. Several sites where Uncle Ho lived and worked before the August 1945 Revolution include Pac Bo, Coc Bo Cave, Lenin Stream, and Khuoi Nam Stream.

Thang Hen Lake – surrounded by mountains, this serene lake is at its best in the rainy season. During the dry season the lake shrinks and is not as impressive, but there are a few rafts that you can take. Walking in the nearby mountains brings you past local herders and farmers. There are no buses to Thang Hen, so the cheapest option is to hire a motorbike driver for the half-day trip.

Ban Gioc Waterfall – this breathtaking waterfall, the largest in Vietnam, straddles the China-Vietnam border. The water is particularly thunderous in the wet season but is still beautiful during the dry. You can take a raft out into the river to the base of the falls and greet Chinese tourists doing the same from the other side. Ban Gioc is about 85km from Cao Bang, about 3 hours away.

Nguom Ngao Cave – ask your driver to take you to Nguom Ngao before or after Ban Gioc. This immense cave holds a series of majestic, jaw-dropping caverns, filled with delicate, intricate formations of stalactites and stalagmites. In the low season, you may even have the cave to yourself, an experience probably not to be had elsewhere. Optional guides will helpfully point out particularly interesting rocks and bat roosts.
Ethnic groups in Cao Bang

Many ethnic groups live together here. It creates plentiful traditional culture. Tay group makes up a large amount of population. They have own handwriting (Tay-Nung language group). The Tay’s special culture is showed in village festival, vi and then singing.
