About 33km from the center of Hue City, An Bang village (Vinh An commune, Phu Vang district, Thua Thien Hue province) has long been known to many people as the “city of tombs” because of the tombs built for hundreds of millions to billions of d**g.

In recent days, the story of a nearly 90-year-old couple in this village spending more than 3 billion d**g to build a mausoleum for themselves has created a stir on public opinion and social networks.

Locals said that the majestic mausoleum belongs to Mr. Ho Van Thiet (87 years old) and Mrs. Van Thi Thuan (86 years old, both from An Bang village).

According to Mr. Thiet, the mausoleum was conceived, designed and started construction in 2021, and will be completed in 2023.

“In 2021, my children and I came up with the idea, designed it ourselves and hired construction workers. The construction process lasted and will be completed in 2023. To complete the process, the family spent more than 3 billion VND,” said Mr. Thiet.

Explaining why, at their “old age”, the couple spent more than 3 billion VND to build their mausoleum, Mr. Thiet said that, like many locals, they believe that “living is the house, dying is the grave” - the grave is as important as the house, so it must be built magnificently.

According to Ms. Thuan, the couple has 9 children. Previously, the family was a fisherman, so their economic conditions were difficult. Later, the couple’s children settled in the US, worked, and sent money back to support their parents.

Currently, all 9 people live in the US, only occasionally returning to visit their homeland. Mr. Thiet and Mrs. Thuan used to live in the US with their children, but they did not get along so they returned to Vietnam.

Mrs. Thuan said that the construction of the mausoleum was carried out when the couple’s 4 later children had not yet gone abroad.
