Celebrate Trung Thu - Vietnam’s Magical Mid-Autumn Festival on 17th September!
Trung Thu, or the Mid-Autumn Festival, is one of Vietnam’s most beloved and ancient celebrations. Rooted in folklore and tradition, this festival dates back over 1,000 years, originally as a harvest celebration. Today, it’s an occasion for families to come together, admire the beauty of the full moon, and enjoy festivities, especially for children.
What makes Trung Thu special?
🏮 Lantern Parades: The streets are transformed into a glowing wonderland as children carry vibrant lanterns of all shapes—dragons, stars, and more! The night comes alive with this vibrant display!
🍰 Mooncakes: These symbolic pastries are an essential part of Trung Thu. Made with sweet fillings like lotus seed, red bean, or even savory mixed nuts, mooncakes represent prosperity and family unity. Sharing them with loved ones is a cherished tradition.
🌝 Moon Gazing & Legends: According to legend, the moon on Trung Thu is at its brightest and roundest. Many Vietnamese also tell the story of Chú Cuội (The Man in the Moon) and Hằng Nga (The Moon Goddess) during this festival—a tale that brings a mythical touch to the celebration.
🦁 Lion Dances: Energetic lion dances are performed throughout the streets, bringing good luck and scaring away evil spirits. These performances are a highlight, especially for children!
🍇 Phá Cỗ (Moon Feast): After the lantern procession, families and friends come together to “Phá Cỗ” – a festive fruit and mooncake feast.
👧👦 Children’s Festival: Trung Thu is often called the “Children’s Festival,” a time when kids receive toys, lanterns, and treats.
Whether you’re exploring the lively streets of Hanoi, the bustling avenues of Ho Chi Minh City, or enjoying quiet village festivities, Trung Thu is a time of joy, reflection, and connection.
