A pothole (๐ญ๐ฐฬฬ ๐ฉ๐ฐฬฬ๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ณ๐ฆฬ๐ฏ ฤ๐ถฬ๐ฐฬฬ๐ฏ๐จ in vietnamese language, literally ยซ hole in the road ยป) is a depression in a road surface, usually asphalt pavement, where traffic has removed broken pieces of the pavement.
The name โpothole" comes from the time when road surfaces did not exist. Anxious for a cheap source of raw materials for making clay pots, the potters would dig into the deep ruts to reach clay deposits underneath. Teamsters driving wagons and coaches over those roads knew who and what caused these holes and referred to them as โpotholesโ.
One of the causes of the formation of a pothole is freezing and thawing. In Vietnam, this cause is probably to be excluded.
Another cause is linked to problems of aging of the pavement structure. Over time, the base and foundation layers deform (increase in water content due to infiltration, attrition between aggregates, etc.) under the effect of heavy weights and transmit their movements to the upper layers in the form of minor or major cracks creating a cracked surface of the pavement which crumbles. When several cracks branch out, the surface of the coating takes on the appearance of โcrocodile skinโ. This is the last stage before a pothole appears.
Outstanding ones may sometimes be encountered, to the point that they could be qualified as โpotcavesโ.
