Strange Maps
You're visiting friends or family, and about to enter their home. Do you keep your shoes on, or do you take them off? This map will tell you what to do.
Keep 'em ON: that's the general rule in red countries. Those are the UK and Ireland, the Benelux countries and France, Spain and Portugal, and Italy and Greece.
Take 'em OFF is the accepted custom in the green countries, i.e. everywhere else (at least on this map).
- Germany is an interesting transition zone: most of formerly West Germany is red (with the exception of the southeast and northeast), most of formerly East Germany is green. The picture is complicated by red dots in Germany's green zone, and vice versa – indicating hyperlocal differences.
- Switzerland is mainly green, but with red dots in the non-German-speaking parts of the country. Italy is mainly red, but with green dots in the northeast.
