“Discover the Secret Base of Saigon Commandos Inside the Saigon Zoo & Botanical Gardens! 🌿✨
Hidden within the heart of Thảo Cầm Viên (Saigon Zoo & Botanical Gardens) lies a remarkable historical relic: Quán Nhan Hương. Founded in 1963 during the resistance against foreign forces, this small eatery was more than just a place to serve food—it was a secret base for the Saigon Commandos, a crucial part of the struggle for Vietnam’s independence.
The café, established by Nguyễn Văn Tửng in honor of his late wife, Nhan Hương, became a hub for revolutionary activities. Disguised as a bustling eatery in a busy area, it provided a safe haven for cadres, commandos, and military leaders. Here, strategies were planned, orders were delivered, and spirits were lifted before crucial missions.
Located near key enemy targets, its position made it ideal for coordinating operations, including those in the historic 1968 Tet Offensive. Remarkably, despite regular visits from U.S. soldiers and security personnel, the café’s true purpose was never discovered.
Today, Quán Nhan Hương stands as a living museum, preserving its original 100-square-meter structure. Visitors can see life-sized models of patrons, soldiers, and staff that recreate the lively atmosphere of its past. The sleeping quarters where commandos once rested remain intact, along with displays of documents, photographs, and weapons that tell the story of its covert operations.
Beyond its historical significance, Quán Nhan Hương offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and cuisine of Saigon decades ago. This hidden gem is not just a place to learn about history but also to connect with the enduring spirit of resilience and ingenuity.
Step back in time and uncover this extraordinary chapter of Saigon’s history!
