Well yesterday was an important day for my 16 year old son Joe. His first day at after school work as a trainee barman and server. He enjoyed it. Thanks to Jamie ar Kiki coconut resort for giving him the opportunity to build his confidence and practise his English speaking skills.

After running my new tour company for a year all was going well. I was getting 2 or 4 customers a week and was happy with that. Then I got my big break a customer hired me for 2 days at the end of the second day, he said Jerry I have something to tell you, I thought what have I done wrong, but I hadn't, he said I'm the travel writer for the Lonely planet and Jerry your going in the next print. And sure enough I was, what a great beginning.

I didn't tell you how I met my new wife. Well after 6 months of being alone, this 1 day 3 lovely Vietnamese girls sat on the beach in front of my bungalow, laughing and giggling, but I knew none of their language except hello and goodbye. So was too shy!
Next day they were back again and same I stayed away.
Woo and behold day 3 they were back again, as evening was approaching I built up the courage to try talk to them in sign language, we worked it out that they stayed a couple of kms up the beach. So I motioned I would walk with them. The most beautiful girl grapes and held my hand after only a 100m of walking. Next day she moved in and never moved out.
Lucky me!!!

So with the backpackers arriving I saw a new opportunity. They struggled with communication and didn't know where to go. No Google earth maps then, or if so nobody knew.
I put up a sign on my bungalow on a whiteboard.
Jerry's jungle tours.
See the islands secrets by motorbike, with only a phone number as had no email address then. And that was my start, and it worked.

After an exciting 1st year here with my new found friends and many new Vietnamese friends. The backpackers did turn up , and in droves. I had already found my way around the Island, got semi-lost here and there, but knew it was an Island find the sea again and back to my bungalow. Beer was cheap, food delicious, weather perfect and to top it off had my new girl.
Happy man again.

There were very few tourists back then even the backpackers hadn't turned up yet. I hired a motorbike and set about exploring the Island. What an adventure. I had not met my future wife yet so did this alone. When the rainy season started the onwers of my beach front bungalow made me an offer I couldn't refuse. They said if I pay them in advance $1000 they would sign me a lease for 12 months. What a bargain.

My new friends Jimmy and Hans introduced me to Norbert, Clause and Cham. Now I was starting to feel at home, and the fun began. Beer was important to them and me being a Kiwi, well that suited me perfect.
