Welcome to House of TEFL

Hi! My name is Jamie Lee Jones (yes, really) and I’ve been living and teaching in Ho Chi Minh since November 2017. The reason I started House of TEFL is to inspire others to teach abroad, based on my own experience. To make it easier for you and let you see that it is doable, that it’s not so hard as you might think it is.

Okay, so let me tell you a little bit about how my adventure started.

I was born in Canada but grew up in the Netherlands where I went to University to be a dietician. After I finished my degree I went travelling for a while. I went on my first real backpacking trip to Nicaragua, which was awesome! When I came back I was struggling to find a job in my field. In the mean time my savings were not only non existent but I was starting to have to live of my credit card and the bills were adding up. As these bills had to get paid I was in no position to be picky, I just needed to find a job asap. Somehow I managed to get a job as a financial advisor at the bank (how ironic right?). Not exactly what I went to school for. I was working about 50 hours a week because I also had to study to get qualified to actually be a financial advisor. It was all very new and exciting for a while, my first real grown up job, looking all important in my little cute little suit. This feeling was quite temporary though. After a few months I realized that this working environment wasn’t for me. But it was also very tiring and it made me realize that this wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. After a heart to heart with my job on the job where I told her that the thing I enjoyed most about my job was hearing stories from the refugees who came here to start a new life and help them settle in she pointed out to me that working at a commercial bank might not be the job for me. Okay, fair enough..

But what did I want? I wanted adventure, excitement, new people and new cultures and most of all I wanted the feeling that I was making a difference in someone’s life. Even if it was just a tiny difference. I

I can’t say that I was unhappy at home because I wasn’t. I had an okay life with an okay job and lots of amazing people around me. I was definitely a little bored though, craving something new.

I’ve always wanted to work abroad and somehow it just seemed that this was the time. It kind of felt like it was now or never. I didn’t have any real commitment at home that kept me to stay there. I didn’t own a house, no kids, no permanent contract. So why not just go?

Yes, just go. But how? And where? What kind of job would I do working abroad? I spent hours looking up vacancies for working abroad with no real result. Either I wasn’t fit for the job or it was a job in a call center or something where you would be working pretty sh*tty hours for little money and you wouldn’t really have time to actually enjoy your experience abroad. To be honest, I was contemplating this. I really wanted to move and have an adventure and maybe I should just start and I could move on from there. But no, I figured if I was going to take the step to move abroad I shouldn’t settle fort he first the best job but try to find something that I would actually be excited about to make this experience as awesome as possible.

And this is exactly the part that I would love to help you with. Once I finally figured out that I wanted to get a TEFL certificate and teach in Vietnam everything fell in place. The way there was nerve-racking and even a bit stressful though. I didn’t really have an idea what I was getting myself in to. It would have been so helpful to me to have someone, a real person, to guide me and show me what it is really like living in Vietnam. Someone who is actually living there and walked the same path and had the same struggles, not that long ago. Someone to reassure me that this life changing decision is the right one, because trust me, it really is.
