PORT VILA TIPS – FYI –
Here are some useful tips and information for your visit to Port Vila:
•City bus to town: The fare is $5 per person.
•Water taxi to town: The fare is $5 per person.
•Mini buses: Look for the ones labeled "B" on their plate numbers.
•Taxis: Look for the ones labeled "T" on their plate numbers.
•Cheapest duty-free shop: Visit the famous yellow building called "Fung Kuei."
•Biggest fruit market: Open from Monday to Saturday at midday, closed on Sundays.
•Greetings: Say "Halo" when greeting a local.
•Thank you: Say "Thank you Tumas" to express gratitude.
•Tipping: You are allowed to tip.
•Essentials: Remember to bring mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
•Bargaining: It is not encouraged, as the local vendors rely on selling their products during cruise ship days for income. Note that cruise ships only visit once or twice a week, or sometimes not at all. There is no unemployment benefit in Vanuatu.
•Hiring a driver for a tour: If you plan to find a driver on the day, consider the following:
•Get off the ship early and negotiate a price with a driver.
•It's best to do tours in groups of 4 or more to share the cost.
•Expect to pay around $250 or more for a full-day tour, excluding entry fees.
•Always ask for the driver/guide's full name, including their second name, for easier identification when inquiring with other drivers.
•Pay at the end of the tour.
•Note that only a limited number of Toyota Hiace buses can pick up cruise ship guests at the wharf, as Hyundai buses are banned due to not meeting roadworthy standards or lacking air conditioning.
•Solo travelers or small groups: The cheapest option for a tour is to book through tour operators. Check their Facebook business pages for reviews.
•Mama's market: After the cruise ship leaves, the market will be closed. Take the opportunity to go on a tour in the morning, and then get dropped off at the market to explore and shop.
•The reason we drive on the right-hand side in Vanuatu is because it follows the British colonial tradition. Vanuatu was once a British colony, and as a result, driving on the right-hand side became the norm. This practice has been retained even after gaining independence.
•When communicating with locals or your driver/guide, it is indeed helpful to speak slowly, especially if you have an Australian or British accent. This allows for better understanding and ensures effective communication. If you notice your driver/guide smiling or laughing without responding, it could indicate that they may not have understood what you said.
•Thank you for the clarification! The people of Vanuatu are indeed called Ni-Vanuatu, not Vanuatuans.
•Bislama, also known as Pidgin English, is the national language of Vanuatu. It is a creole language that incorporates many English words. To speak like a Ni-Vanuatu, you can add "BLONG" in the middle of the words. For example, to say "My name is Allan," you would say "Name BLONG me Allan." Similarly, to say "I am from Australia," you would say "Me BLONG Australia." This linguistic feature adds a unique touch to the language and can be quite fun to learn and use.
