At low tide you can walk from Portwrinkle to this lovely stretch of beautiful sand - and with your 4 legged friends all year round too! Cosy up on the sofa in the winter months after a walk along to the pub The Finnygook Inn where you will find delicious food and a warm welcome. This derelict building in Portwrinkle used to be the Pilchard processing plant. Pilchards are the reason that Portwrinkle exists. The village was set up by local landowners, the Carew-Pole family, in order to take advantage of the pilchard fisheries. The shoals of pilchard would be spotted by a lookout on the hill above the village who would guide the boats to the shoal by semiphore. Pilchards were salted and pressed in the cellar and the oil which drained off was an important by product. The fish could then be sent away to be sold. In the mid 19th Century with the Pilchard fisheries began to decline, local fisherman bought the fishery from the landowner by forming a co-operative called “The Poor Man’s Endeavour” quite a name for the time. This continued until the First World War. Its wonderful to stay in such a luxurious home that is steeped in history. A sunny Sunday walk on the beach yesterday followed by a wonderful roast dinner at The FinnyGook Inn. Just a stones throw from Fish Cellars. Delicious home cooked food and well priced - portions were very generous.
A great start to the day, a swim at Portwrinkle beach, the swimming here is rated excellent. The sea surprisingly warm and it was lovely to chat to some local residents that swim most days, paddle out passed the harbour wall and there’s a perfect horseshoe. Always go with someone tho. Looking forward to tomorrow already 🌊🏊♀️
Great fun at the beach with Miss Margs, wild waves, reminding me of the power of nature during all this craziness. The sea-view, the tranquillity, the whole furniture and fixtures: it is a real treasure.
We spent several vacations in similar accommodations, in Cornwall (mostly on the Lizard Peninsula), in Denmark, in Sweden, but none was of the class, you offer. Chapeau!
Beginning with the precise description, how to get in, the kind „Welcome“, when we opened the fridge after arrival and the spacious rooms.
And then the kitchen equipment - the very best, we ever had. We guess, you love cooking as much as we do.
But, maybe the most convincing was the many amenities: the dish-washer tabs, the coffee, tea and sugar, the hairdryer, the flat iron, the guide books and so many more - not a matter of course. It expresses real and warm hospitality to us.
So after a restful and relaxing stay, we want to say „Thank you, thank you, thank you“.
We enjoyed it so much.
