Interesting moulting facts about the African Penguins

Feather, featherer, featherest!
In the world of the African penguin the yearly, “license to get fat” is a survival must.

During the months of November and December, adult penguins on Dyer Island prepare for their annual moult. Penguins literally have a yearly “change of feather”. They have to replace all the old and worn-out feathers with a brand-new suit. This ensures that they remain waterproof and insulated in cold water.

In preparation for the extreme re-branding exercise, penguins will fatten themselves spending five weeks prior to moulting feeding to gain up to 31% of their normal body weight. They build up enough fat reserves to stay on the island until the “rebranding” process is complete. During the feather replacement period, they are not waterproof and they, therefore, do not go out to sea to feed for about 18 days.

This energy-intensive exercise is a bit like running an ultra-marathon, dressed as an elephant with no water tables along the route.

Humans surely do not grow new skin, but maybe the comfort of eating over Thanksgiving & Christmas provides our "waterproofing" to face whatever life throws at us.
