✨ Día de los Angelitos ✨

On October 31st, Oaxaca is filled with families preparing for Día de los Angelitos, or the Day of the Little Angels—a tender day devoted to welcoming back the souls of children. While beliefs and customs can vary, many hold that once the clock strikes midnight, it’s time for the angelitos (little angels) to return. Families gather in cemeteries, decorating graves with toys, candies, and marigolds to guide the spirits of little ones back home. The air is filled with a blend of joy and quiet grief as families share laughter, stories, and moments of remembrance that are both tender and bittersweet, honoring the lives of loved ones lost too soon. 🌼✨

Our travelers will join this beautiful tradition in the cemetery tonight, witnessing firsthand the ways love and memory transcend time. Leading up to this moment, we spend time with our travelers discussing the significance behind Día de Mu***os and how to respectfully engage with these sacred moments. For those joining us, it’s not only about experiencing the rituals but truly understanding the heart behind them.

If you’ve dreamed of being part of an experience that immerses you in cultural heritage and meaningful acts of remembrance, our Día de Mu***os trip offers that and so much more. This journey lets you step into Oaxaca’s living traditions, where love binds families, past and present. 💫

Curious about joining us in 2025? There’s no better way to understand the beauty of Día de Mu***os than through the eyes of the people who live it every year. Head to the link in our bio to shop the 2025 and 2026 trips now.

Día de Mu***os vs. Día de Todos los Santos: Unique Traditions of Mexico and Guatemala! 🌟💀

You may have seen us sharing about Día de Mu***os in Oaxaca, where the festivities are in full swing right now! 🎉 We have something extra special for those who want to join us in 2025—keep reading to find out. October is a time to honor the past and look forward to the future, and we're diving into two of Latin America's most meaningful celebrations: Día de Mu***os in Mexico and Día de Todos los Santos in Guatemala. 🌼

Día de Mu***os in Oaxaca 🇲🇽
Celebrated on November 1-2, this tradition is a colorful tribute to life and death. Families create ofrendas with marigolds, candles, and mementos to welcome back the spirits of their loved ones. Oaxaca's streets burst with parades, music, mezcal, and the iconic La Catrina, blending a joyful and reverent spirit. 🌺✨

Día de Todos los Santos in Guatemala 🇬🇹
On November 1st, the Giant Kite Festival in Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez fills the skies with vibrant kites that serve as messengers to the spiritual realm. It's a deeply moving celebration, where families gather at gravesites to share stories, meals, and memories. 🪁💫

✨ What’s the Difference?
While both festivals honor the departed with a mix of ancient traditions and Catholic influences, Oaxaca’s lively parades contrast with Guatemala’s intimate and reflective kite-flying traditions. Both are beautiful celebrations that connect us with those who came before.

🎁 Special Offer Alert! 🎁
From October 25th through November 3rd, you can reserve your spot for either our Día de Mu***os in Oaxaca or Día de Todos los Santos in Guatemala 2025 trips AND receive a $300 USD Artisan Craft Credit! 💥 Use this credit to buy unique, hand-made crafts directly from local artisans during your trip—supporting the incredible communities you'll meet. 🛍️✨

In Part 2 of our Día de los Mu***os exploration, we’re taking a closer look at the journey through Mictlán, the nine levels of the underworld in Mesoamerican tradition. 🌑💀

For the ancient cultures of Mexico, death wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of a new journey that required strength, resilience, and reflection. 🌀

As the soul moves through the nine stages—facing challenges like colliding mountains, raging winds, and the fog-covered paths—they are slowly transformed, shedding the attachments of their past life. This journey reminds us of the power of perseverance and the ultimate peace that comes with embracing both life and death. 🕊️

Swipe through to learn more about the incredible journey through Mictlán and the role of gods like Mictlantecuhtli in guiding souls through this sacred process. And if you’re as captivated by these traditions as we are, there’s still time to join us on our 2025 Día de Mu***os trip to Oaxaca! 🎉 Like to plan? Our ‘26 is also open for registration! On the final day of our Inca Trail series, let’s hear what Eimy had to say about the last stretch of the journey to Machu Picchu!

Day 4: The Final Push!
The last day of our journey began in the stillness of the early morning, with a wake-up call at 3:15 a.m. and warm coca tea delivered to our tents. 🍃

We had packed the night before, so we quickly grabbed our backpacks and set off towards the main entrance of Machu Picchu National Park. Camping just 10 minutes away meant we were first in line at 3:45 a.m., ready to be the first to enter the park as soon as it opened at 5:30 a.m.! Being the first to step into this sacred space felt like an incredible privilege. ✨

As we began the peaceful walk through the cloud forest, the first light of day appeared, and we made our way toward the Sun Gate. It was a misty morning, with glimpses of Machu Picchu barely visible through the fog—a mystical, almost dreamlike moment. After soaking it all in, we knew we were only 40 minutes away from the final destination, and although our bodies were feeling the toll of the past few days, our hearts were bursting with excitement as we neared this world wonder. 🌄

Wait for an entire Machu Picchu photo dump coming soon! 📸✨

Want to experience the Inca Trail for yourself? Join us September 6 - 15, 2025 for our Adventure on The Inca Trail and make memories that will last a lifetime. 🌟

Back for another Inca Trail recap from Eimy on our September trip! 🌄✨

Day 3 really put us to the test as we tackled the longest distance yet—9 miles in total! This day was packed with the most beautiful and iconic scenery we’ve seen so far. The trail took us through forests bursting with native flora, and for part of the journey, we followed a clear, refreshing river. While the steps seemed endless, the elevation was more balanced, with smaller ups and downs compared to previous days, making the long trek a bit more manageable.

We started our hike bright and early at 6:30 a.m. and didn’t reach our campsite until 5:30 p.m.—a full 11 hours of walking! Along the way, we passed through the stunning Phuyupatamarka, or “The City Above the Clouds,” which sits at an elevation of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). This site, with its breathtaking views of the Urubamba River below, was a major highlight.

Believed to have been an important administrative and lookout point for the Incas, Phuyupatamarka offered a beautiful blend of history and nature that kept us going even after a long day of trekking.

Though the distance made it challenging, the beauty and serenity of the trail made it all worthwhile. 🌿

Our hearts are with all of our friends and family in Cuba and todo el pueblo cubano. It’s been over 52 hours since the majority of the island has had no electricity after months of rolling blackouts throughout the nation. Abismal infrastructure and mismanagement of finances and resources by the Cuban government placed Cuba is a very vulnerable position. Add in natural disasters and a reduction in oil shipments from Russia, Mexico and Venezuela and the Cuba people find themselves in the dark. Precious food rotting in the heat, families cooking in the street over wood fires, power banks running out of battery rendering people with no means of communication. At times the power will be restored briefly before another 10+ hours with no electricity. Some protests have taken place but many choose to stay home and “aguantar” for fear of becoming a political prisoner.

Enmanuel is checking in with us to keep us posted on the situation and most importantly to let us know that everyone is safe as they find ways to make the best of the situation.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check in on the team. We will keep you posted as things continue to develop and we remain hopeful that the immediate problem will be resolved quickly. If you’re wondering what you can do to help right now, the team asks that you share information about what is going on and help to spread the voices of those who can’t get their message out as easily from where they are.

As of yesterday, there are no Heart travelers on the island and we will be in touch with upcoming groups regarding the situation in a few days when we hope to have greater clarity on what to expect in the coming months.

The adventure continued with Day 2 of the Inca Trail, and it did not disappoint! This was the toughest day of the trek, both physically and mentally, but the sense of accomplishment was unbeatable.

If you’re wondering what it’s like to tackle the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass, our guide Eimy is here with all the details. 🌄✨

🧡Day 2🧡
After an early start, we kicked off what would become the hardest and most rewarding day of the journey. We woke up before sunrise, greeted by hot coca tea, and fueled up with breakfast. The trail ahead was no joke, with an elevation gain that was double the day before. By the end of the day, we had climbed an incredible 1,290 meters (4,232 feet) in elevation! 🏔️

Our main goal? Conquering the legendary Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the Inca Trail.

The steps seemed never-ending, but once we reached the summit, the breathtaking views made every single step worthwhile. That feeling of triumph and awe at the top was something we’ll never forget.
But the descent reminded us that every uphill has its downside! The path to the campsite was easier on our lungs, but tough on our knees. Still, we all made it! And when our amazing porters welcomed us with applause and fresh lemonade at the campsite, we knew we had just accomplished something incredible. 🍋💪

ICYMI, we had an EPIC time on the Inca Trail this September!

From breathtaking views to amazing camaraderie, this women’s trip was everything we hoped for and more. Over the next few days, our guide Eimy will be giving us a daily breakdown of the experience so you can relive every step of the journey with us. 🌄✨

🧡Day 1🧡
We kicked off the day with a delicious breakfast at the stunning before packing up and hitting the road at 7:30 a.m. 🚐 We headed to km 82.5, where the real adventure began. Upon arrival, we met our amazing team of porters who took our duffel bags and set off ahead of us to prepare lunch. With the sun shining, we crossed the bridge over the Urubamba River and started our hike. 🌞 Along the way, we passed Patallacta, an ancient ceremonial and agricultural site where our guide gave us the day’s history lesson. After 6.5 miles of hiking and a 650-meter (2,133 ft) elevation gain, we arrived at our campsite. We were welcomed with afternoon tea and a delicious dinner prepared by our chefs. 🍵🍽️ We ended the night early to rest up for the adventure that awaited us on day two!

Chichicastenango (affectionately known as “Chichi”) is home to the largest market in Central America!

Every Thursday and Sunday are the biggest market days, and the streets of this vibrant town are filled with local artisans and vendors selling everything from handwoven textiles to intricate pottery, jewelry, and colorful masks. It’s a sensory overload—in the best way possible—where the smells of street food mingle with the vibrant hues of traditional clothing and crafts.

But Chichi isn’t just about shopping. The market is a cultural hub, where people from different towns come to trade, share stories, and connect. Whether you’re shopping for a beautiful leather handbag or simply soaking in the energy, this experience is like no other.

You’ll also find the iconic Iglesia de Santo Tomás, a 400-year-old church that serves as a spiritual bridge between Catholicism and ancient Maya rituals. On any given day, you can witness ceremonies being performed on the steps, a beautiful blend of traditions that is both moving and awe-inspiring.✨

This lively marketplace is a must-see on several of our Guatemala itineraries, but if it’s not part of your chosen trip, don’t worry—you can always add on a day in Chichicastenango to explore this unforgettable piece of Guatemalan culture. 🇬🇹✨
