Day 2 is a wrap! I’m back in Portugal’s capital on another adventure with the good folks and fans from Napa Valley’s Chateau Montelena. There’s 50 of us from across the USA enjoying the summer sun and the Portuguese National Monuments. Later we had a splendid dinner at Degust’AR.

CYCLING ALONG THE RHONE — VIVIERS
One of the many enjoyable activities on a European river cruise is a guided bicycle ride. AmaWaterways ships carry 20 high quality, sturdy 3-speed bikes, which are offloaded and waiting in each port.

Led by a local guide, you’ll typically cycle 6-16 miles over 2 to 3 hours. In the Rhone Valley port of Vivier we did an 8 mile ride, along the banks of the swiftly flowing Rhone, then a short ascent to this beautiful, medieval hilltop town.

I flew north, crossing the Golden Gate at 34,000 feet in sunshine. The rain started Wednesday night and hasn’t let up. However, four days of rain doth not keep a good man down. Napa and Sonoma are soggy this week, but moments of beauty appear.

Just completed my 4th consecutive summer trip aboard the American Angler. This is an annual 3-day charter on one of the very best sportfishing boats out of San Diego.

This year was tough. The “super moon” cooled off the bite, making the big bluefin tuna we target very finicky. Still the camaradrie is great. This group of diverse individuals has been fishing together for years now. We lock these 3 days in lste August into our calendars as sacrosanct.

Western Pacific Bluefin Tuna grow to weights of 300 lbs. / 150 kgs. When you hook one of these brutes a battle royal ensues that results in sore muscles, incredible highs if you land one, or just as often crushing defeats. Just one fish will provide enough sashimi-grade filets to last a year. It’s epic stuff that keeps one coming back. 😎

Had a grand time in New Orleans with wine club members from Napa Valley’s Chateau Montelena. We had a ball seeing the French Quarter, Houmas House Plantation, Lafitte Bayou by airboats and the WWII National Museum. NOLA rocks! It's truly one of America's most unique, historic and interesting cities.

Great meals—served with the wines of Montelena—were enjoyed at the Hotel Monteleone, Acme Oyster House, Commander’s Palace and Arnaud’s.

After 18 long months of the Covid-19 pandemic we were finally able to operate our first every USA tour for vintners and wine clubs. We had a combined group of 35 folks visiting Yosemite National Park. They hailed from across the USA, wine club members from the Schweiger Vineyards in St. Helena CA and Seven of Hearts Winery in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Plainly visible on all faces was both exuberance and sheer joy of finally being away from home, to experience one of nature's grandest settings.
