Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory - Michael Chuah Join us in preserving the traditional charcoal making since the 1930s'. From father to son, Michael
(57)

Mr Chuah @ Michael Chuah has been running the factory for more than 39 YEARS. He is known for his interesting and passionate way of storytelling on the process of producing mangrove charcoal. Many of the local tourists and the international tourists; especially from Europe and America had even send or email a letter of gratitude to Michael Chuah for the unforgettable tour around the factory. He sp

eaks in English, Mandarin, Malay, Cantonese, Hokkien and occasionally a few words that he learned from his tourists in German and Danish. Get the chance to also explore with your senses
- see the factory, the process of making the charcoal, the nature and village life;
- hear interesting stories from Michael Chuah, occassional birds chirping and the sound of motorboat travelling down the river during the high tide;
- touch and feel the mangrove tree and learn how to debark the trees;
- smell of the wood and green surroundings; and
- sometimes you might get the chance to taste some sweet potatos. The charcoal factory is located in Kuala Sepetang, Taiping, Perak; a town up north of West Malaysia. The surroundings is so unique as it is located right in the middle of the mangrove forest.

Can you count how many bricks were needed to build one kiln? Our new kiln is finally completed! Due to some unfortunate events last year, the old kiln has to be replaced and the new building project was delayed. Finally, we can see the result of hard work, patience and endurance.

How many bricks are there? Or better to say, how many tonnes?

Taking a rest and getting ready before the next tour the other day. Have you met the boy behind the mask? He is our newest and youngest member of our team. We are so grateful to have him around helping Auntie YL at the stall during his free time. He is not in the factory all the time since he needs to take care of his school work too.

Kind words are what keep us going! Keep them coming. ☺️ Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏 Happy weekend!

Saw this post from and just need to repost 😀 This basketball court is just 3 min drive away from our charcoal factory. Was curious to see if it is on Google Map but looks like needs to update their satellite images and street view. How beautiful is this basketball court? 十八丁篮球场 (PORT WELD BASKETBALL COURT)

Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory (Mr. Chuah)

Brought a piece of “black gold” home for Chinese New Year. Apart from its auspiciousness it also reminds me not to take things for granted. This seemingly insignificant object that didn’t cost much, changed my perceptions when I visited the charcoal manufacturing plant in Kuala Sepetang. The wood from the bakau minyak is harvested from the mangroves, stripped off its bark and smoked at different temperatures for 30 days. Life for these workers is definitely not easy. Some stay in the mangroves without electricity and running water while others slog away daily at the kiln.

Had a great experience at Charcoal Factory Kuala Sepetang 😍
·
Visit this authentic tour of the factory which have been operated by the Chuah Family since 1930’s lately. The owner here is so friendly introducing the tradition process of charcoal making, which we would never experience outside. This 80+ year old factory even exported 60% of the charcoal produced to Japan, which plays a main supplier in Asia. We enjoyed the tour and it is really worth visiting the traditional Charcoal Factory in Taiping, Perak.

Hello everyone, Hope you are having a good week so far. Please help and rate us here too. Will you be the first? 😀 Your review is always important to us - good or not so good. Having guests visiting us is a privilege. Drop by just to hear our story or simply enjoy the surroundings and also maybe a bowl (or 2!) of mee udang, curry me or seafood after/before that. 😋

When it gets very quiet, you can hear the birds chirping. Unfortunately, it was not so quiet when this was taken 😬, hence muted. Drop by and enjoy the calmness of the river, the greens 🌳🌴 and have some Instagram moments 📸 with friends and family or by yourself. Guided tour with Michael Chuah is by appointment only.

The kiln architecture looks simple but it takes a special craftman to build it with clay. Why clay and not cement?

When was this photo taken? Take a wild guess.

He has been conducting rombongan sekolah since 1990s. Or maybe earlier. He has been working at the charcoal factory for over 38 YEARS!

Even until today, he will try to make time for kids and students because he hopes that they will learn something new from the trip to the charcoal factory. (although we are still very old fashioned ☺️)

Do you have any old paper photos (or digitalised)? Share with us here or via messenger. (with the date or year, please 🙏) Not necessary from your 'rombongan'. We will blur out the face(s) if you prefer that.

Have a great Wednesday

Not related to the charcoal factory but would like to highlight our local Malaysians (or Penangite/Penang Lang for this round) telling their stories. Old way is the new way. Now excuse me, I need to go get that rattan chair.

Such a beautiful and jovial smile that makes you smile together with her too.

Spotted Michael Chuah in one of the pictures on Kuala Sepetang CK homestay page. The dedicated TV crew were at the charcoal factory the other day for an interview with Mr Chuah aka. Michael Chuah. The show 八点最热报 focused on the people and the life in Kuala Sepetang. It was aired yesterday and today on Astro AEC. Did you managed to catch it at 8pm? The humble and hardworking lives in Kuala Sepetang.

The interviews are in Mandarin and local dialects.

When we have to stay indoor mostly nowadays so it is not a bad idea to use Activated Charcoal Pack as a natural way to purify indoor air or to eliminate humidity.

It is of course still important to air your room every now and then for better air circulation in the room/home/building.

Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe!

A great gift and decoration for this coming Chinese New Year. Our charcoal block is your blank canvas. Design your own decorative block at home or hire someone (or a florist) to do it for you. A good activity to do with family by decorating a piece or a few together as gifts to each other or creating a new memory by doing a project together.

The Black Gold. Highly in demand as a decoration piece or as air purifier. You can tie a ribbon around it or have some flower arrangements to go with it.
