Giant Griffin, Persepolis, Iran, circa 516-465 BC.

The magnificent ruins of Persepolis lie at the foot of Kuh-i-Rahmat (Mountain of Mercy), about 650 km south of the present-day capital city of Teheran.⁣

Founded by Darius I in 518 BC, Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek: Περσέπολις, a compound of Pérsēs (Πέρσης) and pólis (πόλις), meaning "the Persian city" or "the city of the Persians," but the Persians knew it as Parsa.⁣

Hawraman Village, Iran houses have been built in a steep slope in step-like rows.-Iran🇮🇷

Uramanat villages are unique in that the rural area embraces many dense and step-like rows of houses in such a way that the roof of each house forms the yard of the upper one, making it a special sight to see. The remote and mountainous landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat bears testimony to the traditional culture of the Hawrami people, an agropastoral Kurdish tribe that has inhabited the region since about 3000 BCE. The property, at the heart of the Zagros Mountains along the western border of Iran, encompasses two components, the Central-Eastern Valley and the Western Valley.

Carved relief of priests, Persepolis, Iran.

Persepolis was one of the five capitals of the Achaemenid Empire (the others were Babylon, Ecbatana, Pasargadae and Susa). It is located about fifty kilometers north of the present city of Shiraz in the Fārs province of present-day Iran.

The term "Persepolis" derives from the ancient Greek Persépolis which means "city of the Persians". Because of the belief among the Persians of late antiquity that the monuments were built by Jamshid a figure from Persian mythology, the site was known as Jamshid's Throne (since Sasanian times (224–651 AD).
