Monsoon in the mountains
☁️
And just like that ... all my many challenges of settling back into Rishikesh resolved in a day and I spent the afternoon enjoying the monsoon ambience.
☁️
It is a special time, when the weather turns moody, introspective, and poetic. The humid air today carried a cool breeze full of forest scents and the myriad shades of green bathed my eyes.
☁️
I sat for a long time enjoying this splendid view, sipping masala chai and just soaking it all in. Finally a rainbow appeared and I felt my patience was rewarded.

Sharing another tiger video that I took on our last day in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve. We watched Spotty and her three cubs walk past this water hole and jump a fence to the buffer zone. I love this video because it shows the tiger cub’s reflection in the water hole — and reminds me of the opening credits for Life of Pi when we first see Richard Parker. An indelible moment from the Breathedreamgo Wildlife and Tiger Tour with Pugdundee Safaris. #WithPugdundee
Amazing morning in Bandhavgarh. We saw Spotty and her three 20-month-old cubs several times and spent at least 30 minutes with them. Thanks to Raju Gurung and Pugdundee Safaris for another great day on the Breathedreamgo Wildlife and Tiger Tour! #WithPugdundee #IncredibleIndia
One hour in Kanha National Park and the Breathedreamgo Wildlife and Tiger Tour with Pugdundee Safaris saw our first tiger — beautiful Naina, T76, aka Link 8 female. This is a short clip but we followed her for about 15-20 minutes as she wove in and out of the forest and on the road. Photos to come!
Today’s wildlife dilemma: held captive by Hanuman Langur monkeys in my Kanha Earth Lodge villa! They were playing on my back verandah and front porch, and knocked over all the furniture. Just part of the fun of staying in the Kanha buffer zone, far from the commercial activity near the gate. Eventually I opened the door and they ran away. The Breathedreamgo Wildlife and Tiger Tour is certainly living up to its name. We are enjoying incredible wildlife sightings ... and loving this gorgeous Pugdundee Safaris lodge. #WithPugdundee
Last night the Breathedreamgo Shakti Tour went to the Khajuraho Dance Festival. It was a dream come true for me. An Incredible India moment come to life. We are seeing so many powerful, beautiful images of the feminine . #BDGShaktiTour #IncredibleIndia
One of the most Incredible India experiences you can have. Sunrise boat ride on Ganga River in Varanasi with live music. A highlight of the #BDGShaktiTour Incredible India #IncredibleIndia
On day one of the Breathedreamgo Shakti Tour, I showed my small group the Delhi I love. India Gate, Lodhi Garden, Gandhi Smirti. This area is the planned city the British built and it’s leafy green, peaceful, historical and beautiful. They absolutely loved it. We even had our first magical India moment when we walked into one of the Lodhi Tombs and a flute player started playing a haunting tune. Krishna smiling on us? #BDGShaktiTour #IncredibleIndia
Day 1 on the Maharajas Express. We started our journey on the Maharajas' Express in Jaipur, Rajasthan this morning. We toured Amber Fort and went to the City Palace for lunch. Every we go -- from disembarking the train to arriving at the City Palace -- we are met with a spectacular and warm welcome. But this one takes the cake today. #MaharajasExpress
Tiger walking in India
What a great way to start the new year! Happy new year everyone. On my first 2 days of 2017, I saw a total of 5 tigers in Bandhavgarh National Park on the Exodus Travels 'Land of the Tiger' tour. This tour is most definitely living up to its name. Some of our group members have seen 9 tigers altogether so far.
This magnificent tigress walked out of the jungle this morning, and crossed the road behind our jeep. We also saw a HUGE male tiger do the same thing. Yesterday, we saw three large male cubs walking (and later sleeping) together is a nalla (dry river bed), just about 20 feet from our jeep.
But the most spine tingling moment came this morning when we are all standing quietly at attention in our jeep and looking for the big male tiger we had seen crossing the road just a few minutes before. We were all looking in one direction, while he was somewhere else, and quietly peering at us through the brush. The guide finally spotted him staring at us, and I had just a split second moment to see his huge head before he disappeared. It was chilling to realize he was watching us from only a few feet away, and we didn't know it. We may think we are chasing tigers, but they are completely in control.
Another incredible day in incredible India.
ps For those who are counting, I have now seen 9 tigers in the parks of Madhya Pradesh on this trip!

Tiger sighting in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve
My first tiger sighting in the wild!
Tracking a tiger is a fine art. It requires incredible skill and intuition. I saw a master tracker in action when I went on tiger safari with Pugdundee Safaris in Bandhavgarh tiger reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India.
My guide Naresh, known as Gudda, was on full alert as we drove through the park. We drove along the red earth roads as he looked for fresh pug marks and listened for animal alert calls. Finally, after about 1-2 hours, we heard a growl from the forest, and Gudda heard deer alert calls. With razor sharp skill, he drove quickly about 500 metres along the road, stopped suddenly, and jumped bolt up right to stand on his seat and point.
To my utter astonishment, a large male tiger was walking right for us, and was literally only a few feet away. I couldn't believe it! It seemed unreal, like a mythical creature had appeared from nowhere. I felt incredible emotion, elation and awe, seeing this magnificent animal in the wild for the first time. I could barely believe it, it was like a dream come true. Somehow I managed to get this video, though I was almost in tears.
My first tiger safari with Pugdundee, my first tiger safari in Madhya Pradesh ... and I got this magnificent sighting. In fact, we saw him for about another 10 minutes as he walked around a clearing in the forest. A herd of deer in the centre stood on alert, but didn't move. Eventually, the tiger disappeared into the forest.
I admit that I really wanted to see a tiger. I know ... I should appreciate the forest and the other amazing animals we saw, such as a sloth bear, wild boar and spotted deer. But as our time in the park was running out, I started to pray to Shiva, saying the Om Namah Shivaya mantra quietly. It was at this time the tiger appeared.
I feel very blessed to have had this sighting, it was truly one of the great moments of my life. Seeing a tiger simply is not like seeing another animal. He really does electrify the forest. Many people report f

Day 2 at Jaipur Literature Festival
Day 2 was all about Ruskin Bond for me. I arrived at the session early and got a front row seat. I recorded the session and took lots of photos and will write a blog about my favourite living author soon. But in the meantime I'll post some charming clips of this talented, humble story teller telling stories during his interview.
Came across a Karva Chauth puja today in Delhi. Just about 10 more minutes until the moon appears and the ladies can end their fast.
Yesterday in Phuket, Thailand I attended the intense Vegetarian Festival parade. This parade is a test and demonstration of faith for Buddhists, who allow firecrackers to go off under their feet, and who pierce themselves with swords, knives and needles. You can see the chaos and mayhem created by the parade in the centre of Phuket Town.
