On this day, 39 years ago, on September 1st 1985, at 00:48, the wreck of the RMS Titanic was found!

The wreck was finally located, 13.2 miles from the inaccurate position transmitted by Titanic's crew while the ship was sinking, a joint French-American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aboard the R/V Knorr. The key to its discovery was an innovative remotely controlled deep-sea vehicle called Argo, which could be towed above the sea bed while its cameras transmitted pictures back to a command ship.

This is one of the first original images of port side of the Titanic bow wreck, the two capstans and the port and starboard anchor chains are visible.

On this day 113 years ago, on 31 May 1911, RMS Titanic was launched at 12:15 p.m. in the presence of Lord Pirrie, J. Pierpont Morgan, J. Bruce Ismay and 100,000 onlookers. Twenty-two tons of soap and tallow were spread on the slipway to lubricate the ship's passage into the River Lagan. In keeping with the White Star Line's traditional policy, the ship was not formally named or christened with champagne. The ship was towed to a fitting-out berth where, over the course of the next year, her engines, funnels and superstructure were installed and her interior was fitted out.

On this day 112 years ago, April 23, 1912, Original New Haven Union published an interview with RMS Titanic 's third officer Herbert Pitman. Right after the Titanic stern slipped under water, Pitman decided, among others with the same attitude, to row back to them to rescue whomever he could. However, after announcing this course of action to the passengers in the lifeboat he was confronted with voluble protests from amongst them against the idea, with the expression of fear that the lifeboat would be mobbed and capsized by the panicking multitude in the water. Faced with this Pitman acquiesced and kept the lifeboat at its station several hundred yards off whilst the passengers and crew in the water perished swiftly in the cold.
In later life Pitman admitted to bearing the burden of a bad conscience for his failure to take the lifeboat to the rescue of those dying in the water that night.

On this day and this very moment 112 years ago, on 20 April 1912 at noon, RMS Titanic was scheduled to depart New York City on her return to Europe. Note that the Hudson River was back in the old days called North River, and that trip is marked as "first sailing", meaning, first sailing from New York to UK, while it would not be obviously the maiden voyage.

This is the original poster promoting the return trip.

On this day 112 years ago, on April 19th, 1912, the US Inquiry regarding RMS Titanic disaster led by senator William Alden Smith began in New York. The first witness called was the managing director of the White Star Line, J. Bruce Ismay (can be seen in the center of the photo with his left hand under his chin). Inquiry was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which was later torn down and is the current site of the Empire State Building.

Incredible irony of life is that inquiry was held at Waldorf Astoria hotel, which was owned by the victim of the Titanic disaster, none other than Astor family.

On this day 112 years ago, RMS Titanic lifeboats were dropped off by Carpathia in New York at White Star Pier 59. They were the only things of readily assessed value to have survived the sinking and, therefore, were considered legitimate "salvage," for which the Cunard Co. would be compensated.
Souvenir hunters soon stripped them of much of their equipment. The S.S. Titanic nameplates which were not already stolen were removed by White Star Line workmen along with the rest of the identification plaques, and they remained in New York until at least December 1912, their whereabouts unknown since. They were either left to rot in New York, were destroyed or quietly redistributed to other vessels sometime after December 1912.

"There were many pathetic scenes when the RMS Carpathia reached New York at 8:30 p.m. on April 18 with the RMS Titanic 's survivors. When she arrived at the pier 500 friends and relatives of the Titanic's passengers were gathered in the pier sheds, and their number rapidly swelled to a thousand. As the survivors came on shore a hush fell upon the assembly, "the survivors," says our artist, who was present at the scene "acting as though in a trance, many of them being too dazed to speak." a sum of 4000 dollars raised by the New York Stock Exchange was distributed among those most in need of assistance, and over 100 were removed in ambulances to St. Vincent's Hospital."

On this day 112 years ago, on April 18 1912, at 9:30 pm on the cold and rainy evening, the RMS Carpathia arrived to New York City.

Ship dropped off the RMS Titanic's lifeboats at Pier 59 that belonged to the White Star Line before going back south to Cunard's Pier 54 where she unloaded the passengers and survivors. At the time this photo was taken, all third class passengers were still aboard Carpathia. Anyone with a first or second class ticket was able to leave a ship at the line's docks in New York; those who had third class or steerage tickets and were not US citizens were taken to Ellis Island after the other passengers left the ship at the pier.

On this day 112 years ago, hired by White Star as first of four, CS Mackay-Bennett leaves Halifax to search for bodies at RMS Titanic disaster site and return them to New York.
John Henry Barnstead was the man responsible for the identification of the bodies bought ashore on the CS Mackey-Bennett. He had only a matter of days to come up with a plan. John Henry Barnstead was so meticulous in his methods that his records helped in the identification of victims decades after the disaster. The principles he used set the standard for body identification processes in subsequent major incidents, and his system of cataloguing mass disaster remains is still in use to this day.
CS Mackay-Bennett will return on 30 April, having recovered 306 bodies, of which 116 were buried at sea and the other 190 brought into port.
The Astor family offered $100,000 for the recovery of John J Astor’s body. Each Mackey Bennett crewman got about $2400 as their share. Among the others, body of Isidor Straus was retrieved by the same ship.

On this day 112 years ago, one of the most touching images of the RMS Titanic disaster was created, of a young newsboy Ned Parfett outside the White Star Line offices in London, holding an Evening News poster announcing ‘Titanic Disaster Great Loss of Life’.
Ned was killed just six years later in 1918, aged 22, as he prepared to return home on leave from the First World War. A German shell fell on the quartermaster's stores as he collected a clean uniform to travel home in.

On this day 112 years ago, at 8:50 AM the RMS Carpathia leaves area bound for New York. Last boat, No. 12. was picked up some twenty minutes ago. Lightoller is the last survivor to come on board.
Carpathia carries 712 survivors. An estimated 1,496 souls have been lost.

Ismay wires White Star New York offices from RMS Carpathia, sending this message: “Deeply regret advise you Titanic sank this morning after collision with iceberg, resulting in serious loss of life. Full particulars later."

This photo of the RMS Titanic lifeboat raised on the deck of the Carpathia was taken on the morning of the disaster.

On this day 112 years ago, at 4:10 am, the RMS Carpathia began to pick up the survivors. First lifeboat picked up by the Carpathia was No. 2, while first person to board the ship was first class passenger Elizabeth Allen. The passengers and crew aboard the Carpathia help by giving the survivors hot food and blankets. Thirteen of Titanic's lifeboats are brought onboard and the rest are set adrift. Ice float all about the disaster area amid debris from the RMS Titanic.

"Except for the [life] boats beside the ship and the icebergs, the sea was strangely empty. Hardly a bit of wreckage floated - just a deck chair or two, a few life belts, a good deal of cork."
Arthur Rostron, Captain of the Carpathia

On this day 112 years ago, around 2:15 four explosions were heard on RMS Titanic . Bride and Phillips exit their post. Collapsible lifeboat numbers A and B float off as the Titanic sinks further into the sea.

RMS Titanic band most probably played "Nearer My God to Thee" as their last, witnessed by Harold Bride in 1912 New York Times interview, while some people said they heard "Autumn". As confirmed by renown Titanic historian George Behe it was most probably the first.

Thomas Andrews is, unlike the popular opinion, last seen on the Bridge with Captain Smith, just before the Bridge dipped into the sea, as witnessed by Mess Steward Cecil Fitzpatirck.
Benjamin Guggenheim and his personal attendant are dressed in their best, and Guggenheim said while drinking his brandy: "We've dressed in our best and are prepared to go down like gentleman".
Colonel John Jacob Astor IV is last seen looking for his dog, while at the stern second class passenger Father Thomas Byles, Roman Catholic priest, was comforting a group of people with prayers.

The ships bow is fully sunk and the stern rises straight up in the air. At 2:18 a.m. the lights blink and then finally go out forever. The forward funnel snaps off due the pressure pushing second officer Lightoller away from the ship.

On this day and in this moment 112 years ago, April 15th 1912, at 12:40, Lifeboat 7 is the first to be launched from the RMS Titanic. With a capacity for 64, there are only 28 on board. Among others in this lifeboat was Margaret Bechstein Hays, who cared for Navratil brothers until their mother came to America from Nice, France, to claim them and Helen Bishop who regretted leaving her newly acquired toy dog, Freu Freu, in their stateroom when she realized that "there would be little sympathy for a woman carrying a dog in her arms when there were lives of women and children to be saved."

This painting 🎨 by Stephen Gjertson depicts Isidor and Ida Straus, deciding not to board the lifeboat and to stay on RMS Titanic. Both have perished during sinking and they were last seen together on deck holding hands before a wave swept them both into the sea.

On this day 112 years ago, on 1:20, lifeboat 9 was launched from RMS Titanic. That was the seventh lifeboat launched, and onboard were among others Léontine Pauline Aubart, girlfriend of millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim with her maid, and third class passenger Benoît Picard who climbed his way over exterior ladder to boat deck and eventually to lifeboat 9.
At the same time, the last distress rocket was fired. A total of eight were fired between 12:45 am and 1:20 am.

If the cutaway wasn’t there we would see the open gangway door which accelerated the flooding of D-Deck and hastened the ultimate outcome. When the wreck was found the gangway door was still open.

On this day 112 years ago, at 00:45, RMS Titanic quartermaster Thomas Rowe fires the first distress rocket. It was widely regarded that rockets were only white, until discovery of the rocket detonators indicated that those may have also been blue, green and red.

"Up it went, higher and higher, with a sea of faces upturned to watch it, and then an explosion that seemed to split the silent night in two, and a shower of stars sank slowly down and went out one by one. And with a gasping sigh one word escaped the lips of the crowd: "Rockets!" - Lawrence Beesley, The Loss of the SS Titanic.

On this day, 112 years ago, at midnight, Thomas Andrews informs Captain Smith that the first 6 watertight compartments had been breached and predicts that RMS Titanic will sink in approximately 2 hours.

Five minutes later, at 00:05, Captain Smith orders his crew to prepare the lifeboats and requests that wireless operators Harold Bride and Jack Phillips send the "CQD" distress signal. The message "CQD" is a general call to all vessels, which indicates the vessel sending is in distress and requires immediate assistance.

Later, Bride jokes and says: "Send SOS it's the new call and it may be your last chance to use it." Phillips thereafter began to alternate between the two.
