Bad Dads? Crowne Plaza Hotel Downtown Evicts Hundreds of Gay Partiers

What are your thoughts here? Read the full updated blog on our website mygaygetaway.com

DaddyLand attendees say they were not in violation of the hotel's dress code. The event's promo photos show men in leather accessories only.

On Saturday, July 6, hundreds of gay men in town for the annual Daddyland festival were evicted from their hotel rooms at the Crowne Plaza Downtown after members of a sorority called AKA complained about lewd dress in the public areas of the hotel.

Around 4 p.m. on Saturday, the hotel began issuing eviction notices to the Daddyland circuit weekend guests staying at the hotel.

The notice was straight to the point, and read, “We’re sorry it didn’t work out …THE OWNER OF THE HOTEL is requesting you LEAVE (IMMEDIATELY).”

The notice also said that all further Daddyland-related events were canceled and that attendees were required to be out of the hotel by 6 p.m.

According to the owner of the hotel, Terry Tognazzini, members of the Daddyland party were contractually obligated to follow a dress code in the hotel's public areas. In the private areas, the rules were more lax.

“Our rules say that they follow dress codes,” says Tognazzini. “[And] they came in here and they kind of went wild, so we threw them all out.”

Tognazzini says the hotel lost about “50 or 60 guests” as a result of Daddyland members running through the halls and the lobby without proper dress. He did not specify how attendees violated the dress code. The hotel's website does not list a dress code, and Daddyland's promo photos show a group of men who are shirtless save for an occasional pop of leather.

According to reporting from The Advocate, anonymous members of the party said their dress was not controversial. One attendee said they saw members of the AKA sorority and attendees complimenting each other’s outfits.

A Daddyland staff member who also spoke to The Advocate under the condition of anonymity, said the event, which has happened at the same hotel in years past, followed all the usual protocols.

Tognazzini emphasizes that the hotel's decision was solely based on the dress code violations in public areas and the complaints from other guests.

The rumor mill was working overtime after the eviction. A popular post on Facebook said there was a naked partygoer passed out in the lobby; other posts speculated that used needles were found and that a partygoer exposed themself to a member of the AKA sorority in the elevator.

According to Tognazzini, none of that was true, and the decision to evict occupants of 88 rooms of the hotel, costing the hotel $60,000–70,000 was solely the result of dress code violations in the public areas.

This didn’t quell other suspicions, however.

According to Jason Martinez, a former Daddyland staff member who worked for promoter Ersin Winokur for the last six years helping to put on these circuit parties, communication between the promoter and the hotel had been strained, with Winokur not responding to the hotel’s complaints nor to Martinez.

In an exchange of texts shared with the Observer, Martinez reached out to Winokur multiple times with no response, via text and WhatsApp.

“We have an issue with host hotel,” Martinez messaged on May 4. “I can’t find you anywhere and it says your phone is disconnected or something.”

The issue, according to Martinez, was the promotion of a “boom boom room,” commonly referred to as a “dark room” at the party.

“The hotel called twice. I told [the hotel representative] I couldn’t reach you,” texted Martinez on May 9.

On May 10, Martinez followed up with, “There is no possible way that you don’t have a phone by now and I have phone calls from the hotel. [A representative of the hotel] is trying to call you. You have to remove the boom boom room from all the advertisements. They’re coming on him we’ve done no marketing I can’t reach you. I cannot do this again.”

Despite this, Tognazzini denied any knowledge of a “boom boom room” at the hotel.

“I went and visited them, and it was supervised and everything,” Tognazzini says. “I think whatever this boom boom room is kind of a lot of bullsh*t.”

Hotel group IHG has not responded to a request for comment regarding any “boom boom rooms.”

However, Winokur has put on events in March of this year at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Downtown that clearly advertise a “boom boom room” at the party for an additional cost.

The promo says “DADDY ERSIN presents MEGA RAM.” On the bottom, in smaller font, right under “CROWNE PLAZA DALLAS DOWNTOWN BALLROOM” it says “VIP BOOM BOOM ROOM.”

Hotel worker is fired over being gay and his ‘feminine’ style, feds say. Company sued

A man lost his job at an Alabama hotel hours after his bosses learned he’s gay and saw him dressed in a style they felt was “feminine,” according to a federal agency that protects workers from discrimination.

Harmony Hospitality LLC, which runs a Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel in Dothan, fired the man for his s*xual orientation, gender identity and for not fitting “management’s preferred appearance for male employees,” the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity said in a June 13 news release.

While working as a night auditor at the hotel, the man “styled himself in conformity with male gender stereotypes,” a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says.

In February 2022, one of the hotel’s co-owners took issue with how he dressed when the man arrived at the hotel for a meeting that wasn’t during his work hours, according to a complaint filed June 13.

After seeing the man wearing capri-cut joggers, pink nail polish and box braids, the co-owner told the man’s supervisor to make him change his hairstyle, the complaint says.

The supervisor “refused,” as she felt this could discriminate against the employee’s gender identity, according to the complaint, which says the worker identifies as a nonbinary man.

That’s when the co-owner said the man “needed to be ‘hidden’ working nights because of his appearance,” the complaint says.

Shortly afterward, the company’s other co-owner learned about the man’s gender identity and that he’s gay from the supervisor, according to the complaint.

About seven hours later, this co-owner fired the employee in a text message, the complaint says. Now the EEOC is suing Harmony Hospitality LLC for s*x discrimination, the agency announced.

Harmony Hospitality is accused of violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — along with a second company based in the Chicago area, the EEOC said.

This Italian City Wants to Ban Late-night Eating — What to Know

Midnight gelato may be a thing of the past in Milan.

The time for late night gelato may be coming to an end as the Italian city of Milan looks to ban all take-away food after midnight.

The new rule is aimed at “protecting the tranquility” of the northern Italian city and “guaranteeing the use, by everyone, of the public space in some areas affected by nightlife,” according to the Municipality of Milan. Under the regulation, all take-away food would be banned after 12 a.m., and outdoor dining would stop after 12:30 a.m. in residential neighborhoods and stop after 1:30 a.m. on weekends and public holidays.

“The objective is to find a balance between socialism and entertainment, tranquility and health of residents,” Marco Granelli, the city’s deputy mayor for security, wrote in a Facebook post, adding, “We believe in a lively city, where young and less young people have spaces to stay together.”

Granelli said if the new rules receive final approval, they would go into effect in mid-May. The rule would apply to 12 districts in the city, including popular neighborhoods like Brera, Darsena-Navigli, Isola, and more.

The new rules, however, are not popular with everyone in the city.

“If an Italian family goes out for a pizza and wants to go for a walk after and have a gelato, they will be fined under this ordinance,” Marco Barbieri, the secretary general for the Milan branch of the Italian retailers’ association, Confcommercio, told CNN, adding it goes “against common sense.”

Barbieri added the midnight cut-off is too early since many young people don’t even think about going out for dinner before 10 p.m., especially in the summer.

This is not the first time the city has tried to implement a law like this, CNN reported. In 2013, a similar measure was discarded following significant public backlash and a protest movement (appropriately) called “Occupy Gelato.”

Pete Buttigieg announces a major upgrade for airline passengers

"No more having to fend for yourself and jump through hoops to get your money back," Buttigieg wrote on X.

Out Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg made a major announcement that will upgrade air travel for Americans.

The Biden administration has cracked down on hidden fees from businesses, and the new rules continue that trend. Airlines are now required to disclose extra costs for baggage or canceling tickets, but the biggest change involves canceled or severely delayed flights.

Buttigieg has implemented sweeping changes to improve passengers’ experience and hold airlines accountable for poor service, including record-breaking fines for multiple meltdowns by companies that canceled flights for millions of Americans, and the latest upgrade will no doubt be welcomed with open arms.

Would You Pay a Fee to Enter Venice?

Venice, Italy is launching world's first tourist entrance fee in a bid to fight overcrowding.

Day-trippers will have to pay 5 euros ($5.35) to enter the lagoon city on 29 peak days, mostly on weekends, until July 14 as part of its trial phase.

Ancient and beautiful, the city is sometimes referred to as an open air museum — and now visitors to Venice will have to pay an entry fee after the tourist hub on Thursday became the first in the world to introduce a charging system for day-trippers.

In a bid to thin out the crowds that throng to see the canals, bridges and striking architecture during vacation season, day-trippers will have to pay 5 euros ($5.35) to enter the lagoon city on 29 peak days, mostly on weekends, as part of a trial phase until July 14.

Tourists who have booked at least one night at a hotel in the city will be exempt from the charge, as will residents, workers and students in the city. Visitors under age 14 will also be exempt. But like the day-trippers, they will also have to ensure they have registered online and received QR codes.

Those without their smartphones can go to the Saint Lucia train station to purchase their ticket.

Among the thousands of people lining up at the station for a ticket Thursday was Donna Porter-Mutchler, a tourist from Tennessee, who said she thought the charge was “a wonderful idea.” Venice deserves to be taken care of,” she said. “I think it’s more than worth it. I come here often, and I’ll pay every time.”

This Company Is Helping Gay Men Travel in India

Mister and Art House is India's first lodging catering to gay men.

The Mister and Art House is the first guesthouse in India created exclusively for gay men. Started in 2013, just south of New Delhi, India, by fashion designer and entrepreneur Sanjay Malhotra, the boutique hotel is located in a prime neighborhood of the city and, in addition to accommodation, offers other services, including cooking classes, in-room massages, and relaxation and spiritual experiences.

The initiative to create a bed and breakfast for gay and bis*xual men came about when Malhotra, accustomed to traveling around the world, noticed the scarcity of accommodation for this demographic in his home country of India. At Mister and Art House, gay men can feel at ease whether alone or with their boyfriends–they won’t have to pretend to be straight, or friends traveling together, or have concerns about asking for a double bed, as can happen in certain lodging located in countries without a strong LGBTQ+ tourist industry. The staff at Mister and Art House are gay or bis*xual, as are the tour guides and drivers, with the intention of making the (mostly Western) guests feel that they are in an inclusive space.

The rooms are pleasant, with antique furniture, wood carvings, and erotic paintings. In fact, many of these items are for sale, as the hotel also functions as an art gallery. The lobby, named Nirvana, got its appellation from its calm atmosphere, with decorative candles and rare sculptures welcoming guests. There are only five rooms in different categories with king-sized antique beds, air conditioning, and Italian marble bathroom floors. Personalized services can also be requested from the guesthouse, including candlelit dinners, Indian cooking classes, massages, holistic therapies, guided cultural/heritage walks, and even a private yoga retreat. The hotel also offers an honesty bar, where the customer serves themselves at will and then informs reception of the items consumed.

India’s Burgeoning Gay Scene

India’s gay scene is still mostly discreet. Before opening the men’s lodge, Sanjya Malhotra set up the first travel agency Indjapink, for gay men in India. The focus is on tailor-made luxury travel for gay singles or couples. The agency works with LGBTQ+-friendly operators so that travelers are more comfortable. At the same time, it aims to show an authentic experience of Indian culture.

The travel itineraries created by the agency are customized according to the client’s demands, offering accommodation, drivers, tour guides, restaurants, tours, shopping, and spas anywhere in the country.

Homos*xuality was criminalized in the country until 2018, when India’s Supreme Court lifted this law. This represented an important step forward for the Indian LGBTQ+ community in its quest for equality and respect in a society that is still conservative but moving toward change. The country has gradually opened up with the development of legislation, including hosting an LGBTQ+ film festival called Kashish Mumbai International Q***r Film Festival, Pride (usually held in November), and even a gay sauna. Pointed out as the largest gay men’s spa in the country, The Hammam has 2,500 sq ft of space divided between a collective hot tub, steam room, darkroom, massage, and other facilities. Although it’s not very common in India, what sets it apart from other gay saunas in the United States and Europe, for example, are the aesthetic body treatments offered.

Despite all the challenges, there has been an increase in LGBTQ+ activism in India via organizations working to raise awareness and reduce discrimination. Although the country’s capital, New Delhi, is more receptive to the q***r community, in other parts of India, the local culture can still be a little more traditionalist.

BREAKING** Greece Legalizes Same S*x Marriage

Greece becomes first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-s*x marriage.

Lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted for the bill drafted by centre-right government despite church officials’ objections.
Greece has become the world’s first Christian Orthodox nation to legalise same-s*x marriage after the Athens parliament passed the landmark reform amid scenes of both jubilation and fury in the country.

In a rare display of parliamentary consensus, 176 MPs from across the political spectrum voted in favour of the bill on Thursday. Another 76 rejected the reform while two abstained from the vote and 46 were not present.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community, many unable to contain their emotion, watched from the galleries above.

“We have waited years for this,” said the prominent gay activist Stella Belia of legislation that will not only allow same-s*x couples to exchange vows in civil ceremonies but also to adopt children.

“It’s a historic moment. A lot of us weren’t sure it would ever come,” she said.

The vote followed two days of heated debate – and weeks of public rancour – with the reform described by supporters as “bold” and “long overdue” and decried as “antisocial’ and “unchristian” by opponents including the powerful Orthodox church.

Despite facing formidable pushback from within his own centre-right New Democracy party, prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had championed the bill, saying it would end a “serious inequality for our democracy”.

In an impassioned speech before the vote, the 55-year-old leader, who belongs to the liberal faction of his party, said the measure would align Greece with 36 countries globally that had already legislated on the issue. Conservatism, he argued, should not be conflated with antiquated views that were out of sync with modern society.

“The reform that we are legislating today … will make the life of some of our fellow citizens that much better without – and I emphasise this – taking away anything from the lives of the many,” said Mitsotakis, adding that the law would confer full parental rights on same-s*x couples.

“We are covering a gap by allowing everyone, if they wish, to institutionally seal their relationship … just as heteros*xual couples do.”

But resistance had been strong from New Democracy MPs aware of their constituents in the socially conservative nation.
LGBTQ+ advocacy groups had also criticised the bill saying far from ending discrimination, the law’s limitations – allowing only single women and straight couples to have access to assisted reproduction – as well as “the hate speech” that had engulfed so much of the debate had left many in the community feeling traumatised.

“The legislation itself is so problematic and the language that we have heard so offensive that rather than wanting to celebrate, a lot of people feel quite numb,” said Elena Christidi, a psychologist and co-founder of the Orlando group which advocates for LGBTQI mental health services.

“It’s been devastating for gay men and trans people who want to have children … once again they’ve been left with the feeling that the state has judged them not to be good enough to have the same rights as others.”

Orthodox bishops had threatened to excommunicate lawmakers who voted for the measure while the leader of the far-right Spartans party had said the law would “open the gates to hell and perversion”.

The group was one of four parties – also including the communist KKE party – that overwhelmingly rejected the bill. All four insisted that if they had their way, the “monstrous” legislation would be nullified.

But Mitsotakis insisted that as of Friday barriers would be removed.

For far too long, he said, gay people had remained “invisible,” oppressed by their families and social environment in villages and towns. “They were, let’s not kid ourselves, the children of a lesser god,” he told MPs, visibly moved.

Within minutes of the vote’s passage on Thursday night, the Greek leader posted on X: “The vote has passed: as of tonight Greece is proud to become the 16th EU country to legislate marriage equality.

“This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece – a progressive and democratic country, passionately committed to European values.”

Downtown Las Vegas ‘Gayborhood’ Coming Together

Within these past few months of 2023 the Downtown Las Vegas ‘Gayborhood’ is coming together between the Strip and Fremont.

Las Vegas real estate developers and nightlife promoters committed to designating an area of town for all things LGBTQ+ say they’re inching closer to achieving their goals.

In September, Queen Las Vegas, a boutique hotel with a small restaurant and gaming lounge that’s located inside the Thunderbird Hotel, opened about a half-mile north of the Strat at 1215 S. Las Vegas Blvd. The Queen — dubbed “The Gayest Destination on the Strip” though locals generally don’t consider north of the Sahara or Strat the Strip — is the first of two gay-focused hotels set to open this year.

The Queen opened its restaurant and nightclub this month. The brand’s 28 guestrooms are expected to be ready later this fall/winter.

The Bent Inn at 207 N. 11th St. is just steps from the Fremont Street Experience. The Bent Inn will offer 33 “playfully designed” guestrooms, with the property claiming to be “the only LGBTQ-owned and operated boutique hotel in Las Vegas.”

The adults-only Bent Inn isn’t close to the Queen, but the two properties, the developers behind them hope, represent the beginning of a movement for Las Vegas to appeal better and accommodate to the gay community.

“The hotels in Las Vegas have done a fantastic job in creating a welcoming environment for everyone,” said Mark Hunter, who is developing the Bent Inn with his life and business partner Greg Kafka. “What guests can’t always rely on is for their fellow guests to be just as welcoming.”

‘Gayborhood’ Destination'

Eduardo Cordova, well-known across Southern Nevada for being a leading nightlife promoter of LGBTQ+ events and Temptation Sundays at Luxor, is behind the Queen project. Cordova says he doesn’t own the Thunderbird, but the Queen component at the hotel is serving as a proving ground.

“The rooms we are starting with are kind of a pilot program for what we’re trying to do to launch this new brand,” Cordova said. “If everything goes well, we’ll start talking about converting the hotel to the Queen Las Vegas brand.”

Cordova’s dreams don’t end with the Queen. He believes there’s a market to create Las Vegas’ first “gayborhood” where the LGBTQ+ community can frolic.

Cordova wants that area to be close to everything Las Vegas has to offer while still providing a sanctuary for the demographic. He believes where the Queen stands is the perfect setting to accomplish those parameters.

LGBTQ+ Numbers

Las Vegas is also within driving distance of Los Angeles, which, other than New York City, counts the largest LGBTQ+ population with more than 523,000 members.

Las Vegas is additionally popular for same-s*x weddings, which has been legal in Nevada since 2014. Nevada became the first state to recognize gay marriage in its state constitution in 2020.

The amendment came through a statewide referendum called the “Marriage Regardless of Gender Amendment.” The vote amended the Nevada Constitution from defining marriage as between “a male and a female” to recognizing marriage “as between couples regardless of gender.”

A little more than 62% of Nevada voters backed the 2020 same-s*x marriage referendum.

About Axel Hotels

Axel Hotels is the first hotel chain in the world designed for and aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, but open to everyone. Axel Hotels was created as a meeting point and safe space for the community, where freedom, diversity and respect are the main values. These spaces are created so that everyone, regardless of their gender identity and s*xual orientation, can be themselves and express themselves for who they are. Ultimately, they are places where the stay goes far beyond mere accommodation, becoming a unique, comprehensive experience. In 2003 Axel Hotels opened Axel Hotel Barcelona, its first hotel in the city, which would mark the beginning of a project which has since gone from strength to strength. A few years later, in 2009, it went international, opening Axel Hotel Berlin. Four years later, the first AxelBeach was opened in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, in May 2013. Two years afterwards, in July 2015, TWO Hotel Barcelona by Axel opened as the second Axel meeting point in the city. The second hotel in Berlin, TWO Hotel Berlin, opened its doors in January 2017, the brand arriving a few months later in Ibiza in May 2017, followed by the opening of the first hotel in the capital, Axel Hotel Madrid, which opened in August 2017. Two years later, Axel Hotel San Sebastián opened in 2019, the first hotel of the chain in the Basque Country, and in January 2020 Axel Hotels arrived in the United States, opening AxelBeach Miami, located in South Beach. The latest opening was in March 2022 in Cuba, with Telégrafo Axel Hotel La Habana.
