The Year of Failure

What can I really say about 2020? Well, except for the pandemic, lockdown, the amount of family members we’ve lost – I think the year totally sucked.
Last year I said the same thing about 2019. I labelled it, “The Year of Losses”. Then 2020 came and blew that out of the water. It took everything that broke me and multiplied it. It stripped of the last few things I had and left me literally nothing.
I thought I was smart for taking on more complex and interesting projects this year, but that bombed miserably. I tried to revisit old dreams and projects and guess what happened? That’s right, I failed at that too.
I don’t want to sound too bummed out by the year; I mean one or two good things probably happened. I just can’t remember, because it’s all overshadowed by what could’ve been and what should’ve been.
I had so many dreams and plans, but they were all shattered in a matter of minutes. The thing about the pandemic is it that came as a blessing disguised as curse. The lockdown made it seem like I could work on the things I never really got the time for.
I actually did start working on it; I put in so many hours. I threw in everything I could and then it happened, I published my first book. The one thing I was dreaming of since I was like 9-years-old. I opened myself up to the world; I became vulnerable through the words I wrote.
It was no longer just a passion project; it was me in written text. I hoped that my experiences and my stories could relate to people, but the opposite happened. I failed. I failed at the one thing I could offer the world, because it wasn’t the story the world needed at the time.
Sadly, the book wasn’t what I thought it would be. One sold copy later and it no longer is the story I want to tell. My big break became one of the things that broke me. I guess a part of me died along with that failure.
Thankfully I still had hope. I hoped that my next project which was a culmination of all my hobbies, passions and skills in one book. Eat Like a Namibian was the one thing I’ve been planning to write for years and I finally did it.
I finally felt like I was on the path of success, unfortunately I took a wrong turn somewhere. At first it seemed like everyone wanted a part of it, but not many were willing to sacrifice something to help build my success. So another project failed, followed by another failed project and another failed project and finally another failed project summed up my year.
I didn’t have much when the year started, but now I’m ending the year with literally nothing, hardly a roof over my head, but at least I have a bag or a computer folder full of failed books and other projects.
This year broke many of us, but at least we made it to day 366. I also got to experience levels of depression, abandonment and anxiety that I never did before. So here’s to hoping that all the hurt, broken pieces, failures, mistakes and pain will remain behind in 2020, but just don’t have too high expectations for 2021.
