Games to enhance inclusive tourism for disabled to be held on Amanzimtoti Beach

From 21 - 22 December Amanzimtoti Beach will be holding the first ever Water Sweets Games. This event aims at integrating the disabled with able-bodied people, with an emphasis on fun. The Games are designed so that the disabled and able-bodied can compete against each other, with the able-bodied mimicking a disability, in the spirit of fairness.

There will be some celebrity entrants, as well as locals and persons with various disabilities.

Organised by Wheels On Waves in partnership with Sapphire Coast Tourism the Games are hosted by Rolling with Reece and include a three hole Beach Arm Golf (BAG) course whereby the participant will sit on the sand and throw a ball towards and into a hole, a day of fishing, seated volleyball (2 vs 2) and a South African Sports Quiz.

We will also play Danito, a game named after a truly inspiring young man who is completely blind. Danito is no stranger to Amanzimtoti Beach as he was trained in the beach pool from not being able to swim to completing the midmar mile in 6 months. He was assisted by beach manager Jace Govender, lifegaurd Ntoko and Wesley Smith (co-founder of Wheels On Waves). In Danito you are blindfolded and throw a hacky-sack towards a round score board. After three throws the person with the highest score wins.

After the final, there will be a closing ceremony on Amanzimtoti Beach with an afterparty with live entertainment. This event will be repeated every year, with a 5 year plan to transform Toti beach into an internationally recognised tourism hotspot for (especially) the disabled. This will include acquiring a few more beach wheel chairs, create a list of disabled friendly tourism and accommodation spots.

Inclusive tourism is a major growth market.
Approximately 10% of the global population experiences some form of disability. The World Travel and Tourism Council reports that accessible tourism's direct contribution to South Africa's GDP was estimated at R80 billion. But accessibility remains a problem for many of those disabled visitors.

Inclusive tourism is more than a ramp and parking near to the entrance. From accommodation, public spaces and dining room setups, much can be done to make the holiday of a disabled person more enjoyable.

Founder of Rolling with Reece, Reece Smith, has the lived experience to fully understand the importance of inclusivity. Reece was born two months premature and diagnosed with Arthrogryposis, a nonprogressive congenital condition in which the joints become permanently fixed in a bent or straightened position restricting the movement of the affected joints.

Reece was given a 50/50 chance of living but his tenacity and zest for life ensured that he defied the odds. His father Wesley used to carry him down the beach and local business people saw this and clubbed together to buy a beach wheel chair for him. Reece donated the beach wheel chair to the lifesaving club so that other disabled persons could also use it. From this the idea to increase the accessibility and to make Amanzimtoti the capital of accessible tourism caught fire.
