These leopard tortoises are right at home in the Kalahari region. You will quite often see them walking through the veld or along the roads.

Summer has arrived in Askham with the warm days and migratory birds starting to show up. The first of the Migratory species I saw in the town was the African Cuckoo followed by the Great spotted Cuckoo (a very special species to me). This morning the melancholic call of the Black cuckoo can be heard. Birding in the Kalahari is a magical experience. It always fascinates me how much life can exist with so little.

Living in rural Africa it is not always about safaris and sunsets. The past 2 Days a friend and I assisted Sanparks with a delivery of batteries to their camp for the new solar plant being installed. With the deep sand and rough going the Samil 50 and its off-road capability was put to the test. Recovering the container truck a few times, which we escorted to the new solar plant.

Some of the places the birding tours take us give us the opportunity to view other species. An Image taken a while back in the middle of the day. The Harsh sunlight made metering a bit of a challenge. I decided to overexpose the image and create what is known as Hi Key. These 3 lions were moving down a road towards some shade on the edge of a dam wall.
