Taking it slow today...after 8 hours a day in the car driving in the park, we've decided to have some R+R time in camp and chill under the trees...but for now, a slow wake up with the sun peeping through our tent ⛺️

5th PRINCIPLE - Radical Self-expression!

Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. One of the gifts can be the art of being an amazing friend.

Our favorite Burners took this one step further and expressed their friendship by stealing our magnet sign off our vehicle without us knowing and taking it to Afrika Burn for us.

They knew we were gutted that we couldn't make it, and they were sad we wouldn't be there, so they expressed this by taking a piece of us with them.

So if you saw us at Burn this year, know that it was our awesome friends Robin O'Brien and Shannon Mostert.... the Sunflower Gang 🌻 and you are richer for knowing them.

4th PRINCIPLE - Radical Self-reliance!

Myth busted - You cannot come to Afrika Burn and think you will be gifted enough food, water, ice to survive.

The only thing you are guaranteed is a bare piece of earth so hard you have to use an impact drill to get your tent pegs in, and one of the most amazing loos with a view!

Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources. Every year people leave after a few days as they run out of meds, food, water, champagne.

Speaking about champagne, it is our drink of choice whenever we are in the desert! Why? Well why not! 😉

2nd Principle - GIFTING

The idea of the culture of gifting was so foreign to us, as we come from a society that is built on bartering rather then giving away for free. Bartering money for goods. Commodification.

Our first year we gifted positive messages on strips of paper and pancakes and cream, which we made in our kitchen tent. If we were in our camp, anyone walking by could request or was offered a pancake.

We met the most amazing people through this act. From the 90 year old nudist couple who arrived every morning dressed only in their boots for the day, to the Dutch tourist who dressed as though he had just arrived from a 1970's space sitcom. And we met people who we have formed a life long friendship with and became our "Burn Guides", returning with us the following year where we gifted frozen margaritas. A welcome drink in the hot desert.

Myth squashed.

Afrika Burn is not about trading for food, water etc.
Gifting is not bartering. Gifting is about giving without expectation or need for a return gift.

Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. A society where the value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

What is Afrika Burn. In short, its the South African equivalent of Burning Man in Black Rock, Nevada desert.

Personally, we think it's better... 😊

With the determination that Burning Man would not be just another music festival, co-founder, Larry Harvey, wrote the 10 Principles in 2004.

Over the next few posts we will share these with you along with some of our photos to dispell a few of the myths about "The Burn".

We encourage you to open the photos, zoom in, look around the desert, there is so much happening in each photo! The first surprise will be the sheer size of everything. What looks like a 5 foot burning heart, is really a 5 story high work of art!

1st PRINCIPLE - Radical Inclusion!

"Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. There is no "type". Welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites should exist for participation in any community."

Exciting news!!

The pop up post office that is set up at Afrika Burn every year, has asked to use two of our photographs for the post cards that will be sent from the Burn this year.
Thank you for trusting us with this. Family members will receive these around the world from their loved ones.

We had a farewell dinner with our AfrikaBurn friends this weekend. We will miss Afrika Burn this year and wish them a wonderful experience and will definitely see you in the dust in 2025.

The next few posts will be about our own Burn experiences on the two trips we made in 2022 and 2023.

The West Coast route to our mystry salt pan was dominated by the need to avoid other humans at all cost.

This resulted in us exploring some of the most remote and unique roads. Like the R329, a 100km single track, concrete road from Steytlerville to Willowmore, past Oven station. Where cars have to pull over and stop for oncoming traffic. And the private mining roads on the far north west coast. Ignore the signs, these are public roads and they can't deny you access.

In a dusty brown Karoo hidden valley we came across some unexpected colour with green fields filled with these large purple flowers. We couldn't resist talking a walk into the field. Google later taught us that these were Leaks.

Did you ever have an anxiety fuelled moment where its December 1st, and your procrastination paralysis has left you with nothing planned for the Christmas holidays, and everything is now booked up.

Out of desperation we choose a random salt pan we found when surfing Google Earth in our lounge one day.

We decided that we would follow the outside edge of South Africa along the coast to the most westerly point.

Then drive through the Richtersveld, wild camp on the banks of the Orange River, before following the Garmin to find our mystry pan, and persuade the farmer to let us wild camp on it for three nights over New Years, ending in an amazing NYE party for two in the Kalahari.

Drinking cocktails in the desert, we made an oven out of an old termite mound where Wayne made bread and baked a snoek.

We spent the days listening to Jeremey Loops and folk music, lazing in a blow up kiddies dragon pool and a tin bath filled up from a nearby sheep drinking trough.
Our adventurous spirit was alive and well. Christmas saved.
