Did you know...

That the Lewis & Marks building has been restored! It will now be the new home for the Barberton Mines Trust Community Programme as well as their Enterprise and Supplier Development Hub.

It was the first double-storey buildings in Barberton and is still one of the taller structures in town. A third storey was added in later years.

In the gold rush of 1880, Barberton drew all kinds of characters, including Sammy Marks. He propelled himself from peddler of cheap jewellery and electroplated cutlery to one of South Africa’s leading industrialists.

Along with his cousin and business partner Isaac Lewis, Sammy built the Lewis & Marks Building. It housed the Bank of Africa on the ground floor and other offices on the top storey. Like its entrepreneurial creators, the building was ahead of its time and has left its mark in the history of the town and is still in use today.

Did you know that Greenstone Trading Post wasn’t always a shopping center? Over 110 years ago, this charming location was the Impala Hotel, a popular stop for travelers and a piece of local history!

Today, it has transformed into a vibrant community shopping hub, where you can enjoy modern conveniences, support local businesses, and soak in the history that lives on in these walls.

The Greenstone Trading Post is home to few local shops namely a coffee shop, Cast Iron Coffee Roastery, AmaSweety Shop, Marzis Walls, Floors and Blinds, Furry Friends and Greenstone Pizza (the best pizza in Barberton).
