The Benefits of Manufacturing Learnerships

The manufacturing sector faces several challenges in today's rapidly evolving world. These challenges include technological advancements, globalization, skills shortages, changing consumer demands, and environmental sustainability. Learnerships can help address these challenges in the following ways:

1. Technological Advancements: Rapid advancements in technology require the workforce to possess up-to-date skills. Learnerships provide hands-on training and experience in using advanced technologies, ensuring workers stay relevant in the sector.

2. Globalization: Manufacturing organizations need to compete on a global scale. Learnerships can introduce learners to international best practices, promote cultural diversity, and develop skills needed for global competitiveness.

3. Skills Shortages: The manufacturing sector often faces a shortage of skilled workers. Learnerships offer a structured approach to training and skills development, enabling learners to acquire the specific knowledge and practical skills required by the industry.

4. Changing Consumer Demands: Consumer preferences and market trends rapidly evolve. Learnerships can help learners understand market dynamics, adapt to changing demands, and develop innovative solutions to meet consumer needs.

5. Environmental Sustainability: Manufacturing companies need to shift towards greener practices to address environmental concerns. Learnerships can emphasize sustainable manufacturing processes, eco-friendly technologies, and waste reduction techniques, ensuring future workers are mindful of environmental responsibilities.

Overall, learnerships offer targeted training programs that bridge the gap between theory and practice, addressing specific challenges faced by the manufacturing sector. By equipping learners with relevant skills, knowledge, and experiences, learnerships contribute to a capable and adaptable workforce, capable of driving growth and innovation in the industry.

What to look for when choosing training for your company

There are so many training colleges out there, all offering you the world, but which one is good for YOU and YOUR BUSINESS?

We often hear about companies who have used training institutions who failed to deliver in the end, so here’s a guideline of what to look out for when looking for a new training provider:

1. Accreditation
Private Training Colleges need to be accredited by a number of different authorities. The first is that of the relevant SETA they are representing, such as merSETA, TETA, W&R SETA, Services Seta and so on. They can either have programme approval from a Seta, or preferably, FULL ACCREDITATION. This means that not only are their courses accredited, but also the institution itself - it means it’s been verified by the Seta that the institution is valid and can produce acceptable quality of work.
There are also further relevant accreditations such as from the specific industries they serve – Google is your friend 

2. Experience
How many years has this college been in existence? This is tricky – many people claim to have “worked in the industry” for many years, yet the institution they created is less than a few years old. The question you ask should really be: “How long has your training college been providing training for clients such as ourselves?” One person with loads of claimed experience cannot fulfil the role of an entire institution – what about Scheduling? Quality management? Development? Financials? Lecturing? Auditing? Accreditations? If it’s a one-man-show (or 2 or 3 even) then you need to decide if your training budget is worth the risk. It can be that 3 people can successful train your staff - everyone has to start somewhere - but they have to at very least have trained a company similar to yours – successfully. Have they? What are other companies and the SETA’s saying about them?

3. References
Do they have references from companies similar to yours? Or at least been the providers for companies for more than just a few years? There is no better testament to a College’s performance that the fact that clients have been with them through thick and thin. Any College can get in business, getting REPEAT business is what really matters.

4. Variety of course offerings
There is a difference between offering one qualification and ‘adapting’ it to suit various industries, and actually offering a variety of courses. Even in the most specialised of industries, companies need variation in their training – this enables the company to grow and to learn new things. All companies have ‘generic’ divisions such as HR and Business administration and of course a range of leadership roles – does your College make provision for these options? Only a College that has grown with the needs of its clients and expanded its offerings to suit them, will have a successful retention rate.

5. Additional Affiliations
Which affiliations does the College have? No College can work in isolation – ask about their progression from and to other institutions, what partnerships they have with other companies, if they are preferred providers of associations within your industry, and if they have positive relationships with other institutions for the good of YOUR company.

6. Extended services
What services does your College offer BESIDES training? Do they assist with recruitment / placement / skills development and workplace skills plans? Can they add anything of value to the training like graduations, outdoor excursions etc.?

7. Going the extra mile
What has the College done to impact on the local and extended community – for no financial gain? Have they been involved with charities since their inception?

8. Awards
This one is not for everyone – in order to win an award from a recognised body in South Africa is not easy. Awards received from various professional bodies means than different industry experts have evaluated the College from different perspectives. Firstly, the fact that the College enters these awards means that they are indeed proud of their performance, and secondly, being named a finalist – or winner – means that they have indeed reached the top of the pile and been pinpointed by these experts in a positive way.

How does CPT compare?
By having CPT as your Training Provider you can rest assured that CPT has FULL ACCREDITATION with merSETA as well as programme approval with TETA and W&R Seta. CPT is also in the progress of getting accreditation from both the Services Seta, SABPP and the QCTO.

CPT has been the preferred training provider for many of South Africa’s top manufacturing - and other industries - companies – worth mentioning is our relationship with Ford Motor Company who have been using CPT’s services for over 15 years. We maintain over an 80% client retention rate, which means at least 80% of our clients return year after year. We provide a one-stop-shop for our clients, in that we assist from planning training with WSP’s right through to getting certification from the SETA’s and organising graduations for them. We have evolved over the years to not only offer our highly specialised courses but also a variety of qualifications from Supply Chain to Business Administration. We also manage the complete process with BBBEE projects from recruitment right through to stype-ends.
CPT has won many awards and accolades as well as belong to different affiliations such as being the preferred training provider of The Dawn Group, SAPMA and others. CPT supports several registered charities, such as the Vita Nova care centre, the Kinross Community school and several bowls development sides over the years.

Please visit www.cpt.co.za for a detailed look at what CPT has to offer you as a client.
