Day tours of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Soweto with Danish guests.
With these and a visit to the Voortrekker Monument and the Apartheid Museum, the tour offered a general overview of our crazy history.
As well as all sides of the complex sides and stories.
We as a nation have gone through so much! And still continue to.
We have come so far, but sometimes feels like we are going backwards regarding certain aspects.
Nevertheless, these tours are available with these venues, for all to learn from, and form your own conclusions.
But still, with all our drama, there is no other place I would rather live.
Jozi is still in my heart.

A great tour today from Lush Private Game Lodge, to Soweto and Jozi with Tina Jensen from Safari Eksperten in Denmark, and her family.
So good to finally have met her.
Safari Eksperten being a long term client of mine, of whom I have had a wonderful relationship with since 2007.
Such great people, all of them!

Pretoria today with some wonderful people.
Union Buildings destined to become our 14th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If that is the case, they need to shape up and allow us into the buildings. No science project and security issues.
I mean,, you can do a tour of The White House, Buckingham Palace, The Kremlin..... but the Union Buildings?
They should offer guided tours at a "reasonable" rate!

Law was that no buildings that exceeded 20 storeys were allowed to be built in order to block the view of the Voortrekker Monument.
The taller Buildings such as our Reserve Bank are all to the right of the Union Buildings.

The final stint of Ruth and Steve's SA tour was the Cape.
From PE to Jay Bay, and on-wards to the beautiful Storms River for a few days.
Here Ruth put Steve to work with "learning to tame the fire" and "braai" like a South African! Further great times spent hiking and drinking beer like a local.
From there it was to Hermanus to meet an old Brakpan High boy, with a wonderful whale tour with Dave De Beer.
And then off to Cape Town for some real touring like a tourist.

The Durban part of Ruth and Steve's tour was a highlight!
Not only was it a trip down memory lane, but the re-uniting with Dario Merino (Ruth's Step Brother), after 25 odd years. For me to see Dario again, who I grew up with and of whom I was very fond of, was absolutely amazing for me too.
Many laughs had about our young days brought back wonderful memories.
Good food, good company, good laughs, good conversations and good memories made.
For a change, Steve and I ordered something different, as we seemed to order the same meals at each place we ate at!
A great stint of a fabulous 24 day tour!

The next stint of an epic SA holiday for Steve and Ruth was a few days in the Drakensberg, at the Cavernberg. Followed by a few days later with a trip along The Midlands Meander, with visits to Howick Falls, the capture site of Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. Unfortunately the days were not long enough to see some other epic places along the way.
Conclusion, is that they have to come back!!!

In Soweto with Ruth Templeton and Stephen Deane a few weeks ago.

The East Rand, and more especially Brakpan is often the tale of many jokes!
However, Brakpan has a proud history and was a big part of SA's economical growth back in the day.
Today, Brakpan has deteriorated just like many other towns in the country, with vandalism and lack of maintenance, poverty and crime forever present.
But, with all this there are still good and "salt of the earth" people living there. People who still take pride in their town and continuously work hard to fight corruption and crime to make it a better place.
Growing up here was the best upbringing that I could have wished for!

With Ruth's return to this area after more than 25 odd years, we did a casual tour and traced her families path, from their arrival in 1972.
From Dunnottar to Springs and finally to Brakpan.

In Brakpan, we returned to the area of Dalpark and the street that we both grew up in.
We also passed by Boksburg where Ruth first worked as she went into nursing after matric. Another eye opener with regards to the sad downgrade of our hospitals.
It was an emotional and memorable day as there were so many changes over the years, and memories that came back.
For Steve it was great to see what Ruth had been telling him about and able to put pictures to words.

For me personally, the best part was reuniting her with family (Linda Fox), meeting Sylvia Clarke again and meeting other people such as my son. Doing a walking tour down memory lane (the route we took to catch our school bus), hanging around the old shopping centre that still has the same mosaic tiles from the mid 70's, and swopping stories of our past.
Unfortunately time was limited and we had to move on, otherwise we would still be talking about the good old days!

The next part of Ruth and Steve's tour was Pilgrims Rest, and then on to the Kruger National Park for a few days.
Steve realized that Ruth is a keeper, and she in turn realized that he is a keeper. He braaid for her and did a damn fine job!
The weather was good and the tranquility of the bush was a peaceful and tranquil time.
I think that the Kruger is what bit Steve and allow him to fall in love with my country. As for Ruth, she always did love SA!

The next part of Ruth's Return to her Roots tour was staying at the Graskop Gorge.
With some time to "kick back" drink beer and talk nonsense before dinner was a great evening.
Going into the Gorge by means of their 100 meter lift was like going into a fantasy world!
A really great place to stay, which took away the pressures of travelling in a hurry.
The following day had memories of it's own!

Doing this tour for Ruth Templeton nee Bradley and Steve Deane was one of the most memorable tours I have done.
From ORT to the Panorama Route to Graskop to Kruger.
Then back to Ruths routes in Brakpan and the East Rand and around Jozi.
Then to the Drakensberg and Durban, and on to PE and J. Bay.
Then the Garden Route and Cape Town.
So many roads travelled, epic stops and wonderful people along the way!
What made this tour wonderful for me, was to meet Steve and see Ruth (who I grew up with) after so many years. It was personal, and a whole new page in all our lives where memories were made over these 24 odd days.

Pics of the Panorama Route was the first stint of the tour where it was taken in a leisurely stride, with a welcome braai (oh boy did Steve love boerewors, and did Ruth not enjoy it for breakfast too), and some great views where I was able to take them to some of my hidden gems where tourists do not frequent.

What an awesome day!
