Armistice Day – better known as Remembrance Day – is commemorated on 11 November, when we pay tribute and honour those men, women and animals who have served in wars, and those who have died in the line of duty.

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1918. In recent years, around the world, people are encouraged to wear poppies for the first fortnight in November to remember all those who have been affected by war and conflict. This is known as Remembrancetide.

There are places to purchase poppies in and around the Kloof, Highway and 1000 Hills area. SA Legion tables will be set up in: Shongweni Farmers Market; Hillcrest Corner: Checkers; Oxford Food Market; Lillies Quarter Lifestyle Shopping Centre and Kloof Spar.

Typically red poppies signify lives lost, and purple poppies signify animals who gave their life in the line of duty.

In South Africa, Remembrancetide commemorations are spearheaded by the South African Legion - a national organisation, part of a world-wide family that addresses the needs of ex-service personnel and their dependents by way of housing, pensions, employment and general welfare. It is apolitical, non-sectarian, non-racial, non-sexist and non-partisan. Established in 1921, it is the oldest military veterans’ support association in the country.

Apart from promoting the Poppy Campaign in early November, the Legion manages properties in greater Durban offering subsidised accommodation to former servicemen and women. With the community of former servicemen and women dwindling with every passing year, the Legion will be transitioning to offer accommodation to men and women who share the philosophy, values and standards held by the SA Legion. The Legion is regularly involved in community events to raise awareness and finances to support the work that they do.

For more information, or to purchase poppies or to offer to collect at a shopping centre in your area on Poppy Day, please contact Brad or Jeanette on 031 205 0578 or email [email protected]

Nestled in the lush greenery of Hillcrest, Fig Tree Farm offers a serene escape from the bustle of everyday life. Established in 1896, this 126-hectare privately owned landscape has a rich history, but it wasn’t until 2020 that the gates opened to the public. Initially created as a safe, open-air space during the COVID pandemic, Fig Tree Farm has blossomed into a community hub for locals and tourists alike, offering a range of activities, events, and services designed to entertain and delight all ages.

As proud members of the 1000 Hills Tourism community, Fig Tree Farm is committed to showcasing the best that Hillcrest and its surroundings have to offer. To celebrate spring, there will be the second annual glorious Garden Fair KZN at Vuleka Conference Centre in Botha’s Hill on the weekend of 25 – 27 October, supported by 1000 Hills Tourism.

To plan for spring, when garden preparation starts in earnest, a selection of growers; nurseries; retailers; garden product suppliers; manufacturers; landscapers; and those involved in the garden industry have been invited to showcase their wares and services in a farm-type setting catering for those with a tiny green space, patio, window box or indoor garden; to those with larger properties and subsistence farmers.

1000 Hills Tourism has partnered to assist in marketing the new Garden Fair to be held at the spacious and accessible grounds of the tranquil Vuleka Trust Conference Centre - a stone’s throw away from 1000 Hills Chef School and Pot and Kettle.

Understanding that now is the time to get your garden summer ready, 1000 Hills Tourism invite garden lovers to visit the Garden Fair to consider creating a plant and garden-themed self-drive 1000 Hills meander by also visiting some extensive nurseries in the Valley of 1000 hills - such as Potting Shed Garden Centre at Pot & Kettle; Ludwig’s Star Roses; MacNut Farm (especially their Sunday Fresh Produce Market); Shongweni Market; Stonehouse; Woza Moya; Pilgrim's Rest; the Mushroom Farm; Fig Tree Farm and over the Heritage weekend while Umgeni Steam Railway is running, visit Inchanga Craft Market at Inchanga Station which has stalls selling plants.

The Amashova Durban Classic takes place this weekend - on Sunday 20 October – following the Comrades route through 1000 Hills.

It began in 1986 and has been a successful annual event – making it SA’s oldest ‘classic’ cycling race. The idea of having a bicycle race on the route of the world-famous comrades marathon was the dream of veteran Springbok Cyclist, Dave Wiseman and his friend Tony McMillian.

Over the years the improvements on the route and road closures, accompanied by a steady increase of entries year after year and the involvement of some of the country’s top sponsors has helped make the ‘Shova’ one of the most loved and KZN’s biggest cycling race.

The 132km race starts outside the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, the routes through spectacular scenery through 1000 Hills, which passes the Comrades Wall of Honour. and finishes at Masabalala Yengwa Avenue pedestrian bridge that connects Mustering Fields to People’s Park.

The 106km will start outside Pietermaritzburg City Hall under the Comrades Gantry.
The 65km Half Challenge will start in Drew Lane outside George Cato Primary School
The 38km will join the cycle race on the M13 highway.

Visitors are encouraged to make a weekend of it – staying in 1000 Hills and enjoy watching the race.

For the full route - visit: https://www.shova.co.za/
Be mindful of road closures on Sunday – and plan routes ahead of time.

Today – Friday 27 September – is 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐃𝐚𝐲 when we focus on the social, cultural, political, and economic value of domestic and international tourism. This year the theme looks at the connection between tourism and peace.

“Sustainable tourism can transform communities – creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies. By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence,” wrote António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General.

Closer to home, PheZulu – one of the city’s many tourism-friendly facilities offers a range of meals; guided 4×4 game drives; a Reptile Park, and a huge gift, decor, arts and craft shop. They also host The Gasa family traditional dance troupe who present four dance shows daily.

Phezulu Safari Park is an active member of 1000 Hills Community Tourism Organisation – one of the city’s tourism support structures promoting localised, owner-driven, tourism initiatives.

Pictured are PheZulu staff members: Sne Gasa, Thulisile Mngoma and Ntombi Ngcobo.
