Thank you everyone for helping with alien species removal. The Leonotis leonurus (utshwala-bezinyoni) are spectacular this year and so easy to see with the cleared mountainside. Please take a walk there when you are in Bulwer. Here is a picture Carolyn took recently of a greater double-collared sunbird (iNcuncu) feeding:

The first hike of 2024 was a refreshing adventure to the top of Mahwaqa in the mist, discovering the beautiful flowers of summer, sweet fresh water springs and a tarn. New friendships were made and old ones were rekindled as we ascended through the cloud. There were no views from the top, but we didn't need them as hiking is as much about a view into your soul as a view of the world around you. Suffice to say all souls were renewed and after, all stomachs filled by a yummy braai at Mountain Park Hotel. Join Mahwaqa Hiking Club hikes to experience a new you!

1st Alien Invasive clearing of 2024, was held and hosted at Mountain Park Hotel, Bulwer 21st January. The alien invasive clearings happen once on a monthly basis and great fun is always had whilst being environmentally responsible.

_Moraea hiemalis_. We're seeing these along the roads this year, there are some on the way to Underberg, right hand side before the Pholela river. Also on the Impendle road after Westcliff. They are the only Moraea species around here that flowers in winter. Actually hiemalis means "relating to winter", from the same root word as Himalaya.

Another wonderful benefit when hiking with Mahwaqa, you learn and discover:)

Visited the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and later we hiked Howick Falls...special thanks to our friend Howickman Gcumisa for guiding us around town.
