7 August 2024
Dear tourist product owner,
Your committee together with the Dr. NDZ Local Municipality and the Harry Gwala Development Agency (HGDA) are busy organising the ground-breaking “Southern Drakensberg Tourism Trade Summit”, an exciting multipurpose event. The overall aim is to celebrate our industry, to learn how to grow it and to get your input on the direction we should be pursuing in order to achieve this growth. Part of this journey is our growing relationship with local government as partners on this journey. Friday 6 September is the date and fittingly, September is National Tourism Month! So pencil it into your diary and RSVP to our invitation as numbers are limited!!
The event program will include a number of items we’d like to bring to your attention, and to get your input on.
1) Speed Marketing:
For those who have not experienced these sessions, a number of entities will be presenting to you, the audience. We are aiming for up to 20 presenters and each will sit at a different table around the room. The audience will be broken up into small groups of 3 or 4 and one group will sit at each table across from the presenter. A 3 minute session will then begin with the ringing of a bell, and the presenter has 3 minutes to tell you about their product or to explain their function. Depending on the length of the presentation, there may be a short time for questions. After 3 minutes, the bell rings and everyone moves to the next table. Over the course of an hour, everyone gets to every presentation. Presenters at this event will be service providers from little known corners of our Dr, NDZ municipal district, from the greater Harry Gwala district (ie. Member CTO’s of the newly formed district CTO, the Drakensberg & Beyond CTO) and from the wider KZN and neighbouring areas. In addition, a number of government entities such as SA Tourism (through their domestic Sho’tLeft program), Tourism KZN, the Harry Gwala Development Agency and our own Dr. NDZ Municipality Tourism unit have been invited. The aim is to help you better run your business, to market it and to be able to provide accurate information to your guests and clients.
2) Workshop Sessions:
We will break up into smaller groups to discuss options for the growth of tourism in our part of the world looking at certain specific areas. We have so far identified areas such as the development of tourism routes, how to best grow and leverage events and tourism infrastructure needs. We are looking for suggestions regarding other topic areas from you, our members. Please reply with any ideas you may have to Russell on 081 772 4319 or to [email protected] .
3) Signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the SDCTO and the Dr. NDZ Municipality.
This is a ground-breaking agreement which will govern the mutually beneficial relationship between our two bodies. It is a symbol of the new joint purpose that exists between the private and public sectors to work together to grow our industry for the benefit of all in our district. The SDCTO has committed to be representative of the entire industry and the municipality has committed to supporting the private sector in identifying a strategy and driving growth to the benefit of all citizens.
4) The Launch of the new District CTO, the “Drakensberg & Beyond Community Tourism Organisation” (DBCTO):
The SDCTO has joined with CTO’s from the other local municipalities in the Harry Gwala District Municipality, namely Ixopo (Ubuhlebezwe Municipality), Umzimkulu and Greater Kokstad to jointly market our corner of KZN. A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed between the DBCTO and the Harry Gwala Development Agency, the body representing the district municipality, who will be supporting and partnering with the DBCTO in this endeavour.
5) Guest of Honour/Keynote Speaker:
We have invited the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, to be our guest of honour and keynote speaker at the Summit, but she will only be able to confirm her attendance closer to the time.
6) The Underberg Visitor Information Centre (VIC):
What we have called the Tourist Information Office is being moved from its location in the Clocktower Centre to a brand new spot at the Drovers Centre. It will officially be called the “Underberg Visitor Information Centre”. Alterations to the building are taking place at the moment, and if the new centre is ready in time, it will be officially opened at the Summit as well. The new VIC will have space within set aside as a small office area for the SDCTO’s use, and the Municipality is also facilitating an intern who will be available to work for the SDCTO, allowing us to achieve a lot more! Very exciting.
We look forward to seeing you on the 6th, please RSVP as soon as possible. Owners and managers of any tourist or tourist-related business are welcome, as well as anyone who feels they have something to contribute.
