At 4-5 weeks old, Makhomsava's two cubs are at a delicate age. We're making sure to keep safari vehicles around them at a minimum during this formative stage, but this beautiful moment of one tentatively peeking at us through the bushes was too good to not capture!

Lion dynamics are fascinating, and around these parts we are blessed with plenty!

Our latest blog (https://www.arathusa.co.za/2024/12/10/lion-dynamics/ ) covers the ever-evolving relationships between our territorial lions and prides.

Which is your favourite?

Tortoise Pan, the peacemaker.
He quickly swooped into action today to calm down the fight between Langa and her mother, Sibuye.
The brawl started when Sibuye trespassed into Langa's territory, and thankfully didn't escalate further due to Tortoise Pan's authoritative intervention.

Now for a closer look at some of the unusual wildlife around Arathusa!
Rock monitors, close relatives to Komodo dragons, are strong climbing experts despite their bulky builds. They're rather easy to identify by their distinctive side-to-side walking motion.

On our afternoon drive, we found the Nkuhuma lions feeding on the remains of a giraffe, believed to have died of natural causes. This was a fortunate opportunity for the pride, as taking down a giraffe is an incredibly risky endeavour. With their towering height and powerful legs, giraffes can deliver a kick strong enough to shatter bones or even kill a lion. Hunting one often requires a coordinated effort and puts the lions at significant danger of injury or death. In this case, the lions avoided the peril of the hunt and instead have a feast that will sustain them for days to come.

The first power struggle. The recent arrival of the new male leopard, Hlambela, was bound to have some impact on the dynamic in the area, and today we saw the aftermath of a confrontation between him and Tortoise Pan. From here on, territories will be defended with great vigour!

How fast they grow...

Standing guard over yet another fresh impala kill, it's evident that Nhenhe's moving towards independence.

The day is fast approaching that he'll leave his mother's side. We can only hope he won't venture too far to find and establish his own territory.

It seems there's a new kid on the block!
There is a lot still to learn about this male newcomer named Hlambela, but we're very excited to observe closely and find out more about his behaviour and relationship with the leopards already in the area.

After the recent rains, it was high time for the Ndhzengas to reestablish their presence and mark their territory north of MalaMala.

Nhenhe and Xidulu look more than satisfied with their day's work.

On average, leopards will eat roughly a third of their kill, meaning this impala is more than enough for the two of them.

A formidable pair of pincers, with purpose. These burrowing scorpions, as their name suggests, are known for constructing elaborate and deep burrows.

Well-earned rest on new ground! This wild dog pack spent a busy day introducing their pups to unfamiliar territory, scent marking along the way.

Not all days are lazy days for lions. During oestrus, these cats can mate up to 50 times in a single day!
Kumbula and an Nkuhuma female were wasting no time when we found them a couple of days ago.

In the wild, nothing goes to waste. Mike captured this footage of Nhenhe finishing off a kill, relishing every morsel.
